Crop loss pegged at ₹1.75 crore; 474 persons accommodated at camps

Five relief camps have been opened in Kodenchery and Thiruvamabady grama panchayats in the district to accommodate those who have been affected by the landslip at Pulloorampara and Anankkampoyil. As many as 474 persons from 119 families have been accommodated at the camps set up at St.Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Pulloorampara; St. Sebastian’s L.P. School, Muthappanpuzha; Parish Hall in Karimbu; Government U.P. School in Chembukadavu and A.L.P. School, Nooramthodu. Besides, 17 families in Pulloorampara have been shifted to the houses of their relatives. Arrangements have been made to provide food at the camps under the aegis of the grama panchayats.

George.M. Thomas, MLA, M.I. Shanavas, MP, and District Collector U.V. Jose visited the affected areas on Wednesday. The Collector has declared holiday for all schools that function as relief camps. He has also imposed restrictions on the functioning of stone quarries in Karasseri, Thiruvambady, Kodencheri and Koodaranhi panchayats.

Meanwhile, 24-hour control rooms have been opened at Kozhikode Collectorate and taluk offices. The control room numbers are 0495-2371002 (Collectorate), 0495-2223088 (Tamarasseri taluk), 0495- 2372966 (Kozhikode taluk), 0496-2620235 (Koyilandy taluk) and 0496-2522361 (Vadakara taluk).

Severe flooding

The landslip occurred on Tuesday evening caused flooding in several parts of the two panchayats and has resulted in crop loss worth ₹1.75 crore. Fifty hectares have been flooded in Thiruvambady alone, destroying crops like banana, nutmeg, coconut and arecanut. Harvested coconuts were washed away in the flood water.

A 110-metre stretch of road has been washed away near Kandappanchal Bridge that connects Kodencheri and Thiruvambady panchayats, besides a half kilometre stretch of Anakkampoyil-Karimbu Road. The District Collector has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to reconstruct the roads immediately. The KSEB has been directed to re-establish damaged electric lines and prepare an estimate of the total loss. The Health Department has been asked to take steps to prevent spread of contagious diseases as septic tanks have been flooded in many places.

Two houses at Vendekkumpoyil Tribal Colony in Kodenchery were partially destroyed. The District Scheduled Tribes Development Officer has been directed to rebuild the houses in the tribal colony and to provide help to the colony residents.
