The Prohibition and Excise Department on Tuesday destroyed 7,814 kg of dry ganja seized in 62 cases of illegal transportation detected in East and West Godavari districts.
The seized ganja was ordered to be destroyed by the drug disposal committee under Section 52-A of the NDPS Act, 1985.
The destruction process was undertaken in the presence of Excise Minister K.S.Jawahar, Prohibition and Excise Commissioner P. Lakshmi Narasimham, East Godavari Deputy Commissioner B. Aruna Rao, West Godavari Deputy Commissioner Y.B. Bhaskara Rao and Assistant Commissioner, Kakinada, Hemanth Nagaraju at Bavojipeta village of Vedurupaka panchayat in Gokavaram mandal.
A total of 47 cases were detected in East Godavari district resulting in a seizure of 5,831 kg and 15 cases in West Godavari district wherein 1,984 kg was seized.
Mr. Jawahar said the Excise Department was determined to make the State free of ganja cultivation and sale. As part of this programme, 1.69 crore ganja plants were destroyed in the Visakhapatnam and East Godavari agency mandals.
