Whitehall police reported an armed robbery at 3:20 a.m. June 4 at McDonald's, 4640 E. Main St.

Three employees were at the store, but only one encountered the gunman, police said.

That employee, an 18-year-old man, told police a man entered an office, pointed a gun at him and ordered him to open a safe.

The man wore dark clothing, a mask and a backpack, according to reports.

The employee told police he feared for his life and opened the safe.

A female employee who was cleaning told police she saw a man run directly into the office, then heard yelling.

The gunman ran away with at least several hundred dollars, reports said.

A description of the suspect and a vehicle was aired to police.

Officers observed a vehicle with Maryland plates leaving the scene of the robbery and saw the driver make several traffic violations, then enter the parking lot of a closed gas station, reports said.

The driver appeared to match the description of the suspect, according to police.

After stopping the driver, police noticed money on the front seat of the vehicle. The driver could not produce identification and appeared intoxicated, reports said.

He reportedly told police he went to McDonald's for change and was on his way to a hotel room.

Police also observed a paper grocery bag in the car and found folded $20 bills totaling several hundred dollars in a backpack, reports said.

Officers eventually found the man's identification card and learned he is from California.

Police administered field sobriety tests and determined he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and no gun was found in the vehicle, according to reports.

After reviewing video images at McDonald's, police determined the suspect was wearing blue underclothing, which was not found in the vehicle, reports said. None of the restaurant's employees could identify the driver, according to reports.

The man was released without being charged, reports said.
