The government is taking measures to provide corporate-level education to the poorer sections in the State, said Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Government Junior College building constructed at a cost of ₹2.5 crore in Chigirumamidi mandal headquarters, he said 573 residential schools for SC, ST, BC and minority community students apart from 53 residential degree colleges have been started and 187 residential schools upgraded to junior colleges to provide corporate level education. He, however, expressed concern over enrolment of only 125 students in the Chigirumamidi junior college.

Stating that over 4.5 lakh students are studying in residential schools across the state, he said the government is spending ₹3,370 crore for their education.

Mr. Srihari also informed that hygiene kits are being provided to 6.5 lakh girl students aged between 10 and 18, at a cost of ₹1,600 per kit per annum.

He added that the government is spending ₹313 crore for strengthening junior colleges by constructing pucca buildings with labs, libraries and other amenities.
