MANALI: Residents of Leh and
Kargil on Sunday scuffled with each other and pelted stones over rights to use land in
Sarchu, which otherwise is claimed by
Himachal Pradesh.
Deputy commissioners of Leh and Kargil visited Sarchu on Sunday. As soon as they returned, vendors and other from Kargil and Leh started fighting over jurisdiction. Police arrested a few people to calm tempers.
For Himachal Pradesh, Sarchu is part of Lahaul-Spiti district. Local officers claim that people of Ladakh, including J&K police intruded into their area by setting up a post. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Ashwani Kumar Chaudhary said, “Himachal was not involved in and the
Ladakh administration had not even informed us about it.”
