JAC 10th result: Jharkhand board says matric pass percentage lowest since 2006, boys outdo girls

The Jharkhand matriculation, or class 10 results, declared on Tuesday witnessed the lowest pass percentage since 2006, with just 59.48% of over four lakh students clearing the exams this year.

Of the 4,28,379 students who took the exam at 954 centres across the state, only 2,54,830 have passed, the Jharkhand Academic Council, which declared the JAC 10th result, said.

“We will review the reasons of falling pass percentage,” JAC chairperson Arvind Prasad Singh said.

Former education secretary AP Singh, who is currently on training, said, “Prima facie it seems strict measures adopted to curb the use of unfair means in the board examination were major reasons for this pass percentage. However, a detail review of the results is required to ascertain the actual reasons.”

JAC had installed closed-circuit television, or CCTV, cameras for the first time this year at all exam and evaluation centres to ensure transparency, officials claimed. And, the entire procedure from registration to admit card was taken online.

The chairperson said while the JAC 10th pass percentage has dipped, the quality of education has improved. “This is for the first time when a total of 1,01, 020 students passed with first division marks, which is 23% of the total results. Altogether, 1,18,046 students passed with second division marks.”

For a change, boys performed better than girls in the JAC 10th results. While 61.79% boys passed, the pass percentage of girls was 57.29%. Of the 2,08, 701 boys who sat for the exam, 1,28,959 cleared it. A total of 2,19,688 girls took the exam and 1,25,871 passed it.

Tushar Ranjan of RES High School, Netarhat, emerged the state topper in the JAC 10th result, scoring 97.60% in aggregate. Out of 500, he scored 488 marks.

Amit Kumar from RES High School, Netarhat, achieved 97.40% while Amisha Kumari from Indira Gandhi Balika High School, Hazaribag bagged third position in the JAC 10th results with 97.20%.

Hazaribagh district had the highest pass percentage of 74.75%, followed by Ranchi (72.93%) and East Singhbhum (68.23%). Latehar witnessed the lowest pass percentage with 38.19%, followed by Garhwa (40.21%) and Chatra (42.59%).

The Jharkhand chief minister congratulated the students who cleared the examinations and wished them a bright future. “The students who could not qualify for admission to higher classes should not lose heart. They should not be depressed but should labour hard for the next year. They will get success for sure,” he added.

JAC had declared the results of the intermediate, or Class 12, science and commerce streams on June 7 and 48.34% science students and 67.49% commerce candidates cleared the examination. The results of the Class 12 arts stream is yet to be announced.
