Dependence On Tankers Continues
HYDERABAD:Rain has brought the much-needed cheer among denizens and led to a rise in the groundwater table in the city. But, in spite of the rains, areas like Erragadda, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Srinagar Colony, Shaikpet and Saidabad, recorded a poor recharge of groundwater. Though it’s not alarming, the not-so-expected rise in the groundwater table in these residential colonies comes as a dampener to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (HMWS&SB) efforts to cut down on residents’ dependence on private tankers.
On the groundwater levels not picking up in certain residential areas, officials blame it on the rainwater not percolating into the aquifers. “With high-rises and big apartment blocks coming up all over and concretisation at a rapid pace, the groundwater recharge is not happening properly,” an official said. But, not everything is lost as the latest groundwater department report says that Marredpally, Chintalbasthi, Nampally,
Musheerabad, Asifnagar and Charminar have seen the groundwater table at a far more satisfactory level when compared to 2017.
In Marredpally, Nampally, Musheerabad, Asifnagar,

Humayun Nagar, Kulusmpura, Bandlaguda, Charminar, Bahadurpura, Khairatabad, Himayathnagar and Secunderabad, the groundwater table has seen a rise from 0.75 metres to 3.90 metres and water shortage could be overcome. “The groundwater table has gone up owing to moderate showers in April and May,” an official of groundwater department said. The board’s efforts to supply water in GHMC peripheral areas have helped too.
Officials said if the table has to go up further, the city will have to get copious rainfall in June, July and August.
