An Ormond Beach man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and their child and, among other threats, said he would slit their throats and dump them in a swamp, police said.
Robert Govelitz, 28, faces nearly a dozen charges and was being held Monday at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $358,000 bail.
At about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Ormond Beach resident forced his former girlfriend and their child into a red Hyundai Elantra and threatened to kill them by crashing the car, after which he'd dump their bodies in a swamp, which he admitted to police, according to a charging affidavit. Before the kidnapping, the woman was able to contact her current boyfriend who called police.
The ex-girlfriend said Govelitz "grabbed her by the back of the head and smashed her head into the dash as he kept telling her she couldn't be with someone else," and if he couldn't have her, no one would, according to the affidavit. She said he also threatened to cut hers and their child's throats and dump them in a swamp.
The woman's mother called Govelitz and told him to return her daughter and grandchild or she'd call police and Govelitz would be arrested, according to the affidavit. Govelitz, traveling on Interstate 95, calmed down and headed back toward the residence.
The ex-girlfriend said once Govelitz calmed down, he said his life was over and talked about how their child had a new family, according to the affidavit.
Police did not release information about the victims and their residence was redacted from the report.
Govelitz is charged with kidnapping a victim younger than 13, kidnapping an adult, false imprisonment of a child, false imprisonment, aggravated child abuse, two counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit felony, grand theft of a motor vehicle, battery, possession of paraphernalia and possession of hashish oil, records show.
