Canadian troupe Cirque du Soleil to perform at Mumbai’s BKC

Here’s good news for theatre lovers in the city. Cirque du Soleil, the largest theatrical producer in the world, will hold its first performance in India in the city this year.

The state government has decided to rope in the Canadian performance troupe as part if it’s ‘Visit Maharashtra’ tourism initiative. The group will perform at MMRDA Grounds at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The announcement was made by chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Monday, who was in Montreal, Canada, as part of his eight-day tour. The date of the show is yet to be declared.

The CM made the announcement after meeting Finn Taylor, senior vice president of Touring Shows, Cirque du Soleil. Ashish Hemrajani, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of BookMyShow, was also present at the meeting.

With an annual turnover of USD 1 billion and an annual sale of 10-million tickets, Cirque du Soleil has produced iconic acts such as KÀ, Corteo and the classic Mystère.

The group is known for its unique acts and their out-of-the-world sets. The initiative will not only help boost the tourism in the state, but will also be a unique opportunity for Mumbaiites as they will be exposed to a unique cultural experience, officials said. Earlier this year, Mumbai was the preferred destination for Disney as it opened its famous production Aladdin at NCPA.
