HYDERABAD: ARCI Hyderabad, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy & New Materials of the department of science and technology along with CSIR-NEERI has developed an
eco-friendly sanitary pad incinerator. The device was launched on Monday. It will be very useful in colleges, schools and hostels.
‘GreenDispo’ incinerates used napkins at a temperature of more than 800 degrees Centigrade and helps in safe disposal.
Dr Rakesh Kumar, director, CSIR NEERI, said that as per current estimates, more than 400 million sanitary napkins are disposed every month in the country.
“Inappropriate handling has become a challenge as the used napkin grows harmful pathogens causing serious health and environmental hazards,” he said.
The device was developed by ARCI using ceramic processing and shape aided by energy efficiencies design and manufacturing of Sowbal Aerothermis and environmental engineering as well as flue case emission control expertise of CSIR-NEERI.
The device was formally launched by ARCI director Dr G Padmanabham along with Rakesh Kumar. Kumar added, “Blockage of drains due to disposal of napkins is also an important issue.”
Padmanabham said, “Concentration of heat to the pads not only provides reduced ignition time, higher peak temperature and increased life expectancy of the heater element but also reduces power consumption.
With a power rating of 800 watts and 1,000 watts and a unit size of about 2-3 cubic feet volume, GreenDispo is a very efficient batch type incinerator, suitable for use in rural and urban schools, colleges, hostels, offices and public and community places.
