Rescue at Mount Hotham

More on that rescue operation on the Great Alpine Road.

Melissa Cunningham reports: An ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene about 6.30am.

A man was trapped in a car after his vehicle went down a 10-metre embankment. It's believed there were initially two people trapped in the car, but both have since been rescued. An air ambulance has been sent.

Queen Victoria Market 'terror plot'

Authorities say a foreign terror plot to attack Melbourne landmarks such as the Queen Victoria Market was assessed by police earlier this year and does not pose a threat to Australia.

News Corp reports that a family from Britain, dubbed "jihadi hunters" by UK media for their efforts in tracking down would-be terrorists, was in contact with a foreign fighter.

Victoria Police said it often received information, and intelligence about the market terror plot was not found to be a risk to the public.

A motorist driving an unregistered, unroadworthy vehicle has allegedly continued talking on his mobile phone after police pulled him over in Melbourne's east last night.

Police say the 27-year-old was detected driving 110km/h in a 60km/h zone in Vermont. One of the arresting officers had intercepted the same man last month.

The Glen Waverley man's car was impounded for 30 days. He's expected to be charged on summons.

Woman rescued from fire

An elderly woman has been rescued from her home in Malvern overnight after falling during a kitchen fire.

MFB firefighters were called to the Chaucer Avenue property at 7.30pm. They forced the door open and found the woman, aged in her 80s, in the smoke-filled kitchen.

Firefighters said the woman had mobility issues and was unable to evacuate after falling. The fire was contained to cooking on the stove. The woman was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.
