CHANDIGARH: As high as 50% reservation for women in
Panjab University syndicate (elected members) and in the different constituencies of the senate has been recommended by the governance reforms committee. The committee, led by Justice BB Parsoon (retd), recommended that the total strength of the senate should be truncated to 46 members from the present 91.
The committee has also recommended deleting the provision of including the chief minister of Punjab and the Chief Justice of the Punjab and
Haryana high court in the senate as ex officio members. The committee members were of the opinion that these members were too busy to attend the senate meetings.
The committee has also proposed that matters on which the syndicate has reached a consensus without a vote shall be deemed to be approved by the senate without discussion unless a request for it from any member of the senate is received by the registrar in writing at least seven days before the meeting. Any item of the agenda of the senate, which has been approved by the syndicate, can be taken up for discussion at the discretion of the vice-chancellor.
