CHENNAI: A 33-year-old man, who claimed to be an MBA degree holder, was arrested for allegedly stealing 12 sovereigns of gold jewellery from his landlord’s house at Thiru Vi Ka Nagar here on Monday.
The man, identified as A Elamathi of Udankudi in Tuticorin district, told police that it was his first attempt at stealing. However, police were checking if he had been involved in any previous crimes.

The Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police recovered the stolen jewellery from the house of his aunt, Pushpa, 70, at Sembium.

Elamathi told the police that he completed MBA in a university in Madurai in 2006 and married Sivakala. He stayed at a rented house in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar paying 3,900 as rent.

As he didn’t have proper salary, he struggled to make both ends meet. This forced him to steal valuables from landlord T Arivazhagan’s house when the latter went to a nearby shop. Arivazhagan had left the doors unlocked as he would return soon.

Elamathi took advantage of this opportunity, stole the gold jewellery from a safe in the house and returned to his house, next door.

When Elamathi informed his wife that he had stolen jewellery from the landlord’s house, she scolded him and asked him to keep the valuable back at the same safe. However, by the time he stepped out with the jewellery, Arivazhagan had returned home.

Elamathi put the jewellery in a plastic box and went to his aunt’s home. He gave the box to his aunt saying that he would collect it later. He returned home by 8pm.

Meanwhile, Arivazhagan realised that someone had stolen his jewellery and informed the police. The police questioning Arivazhagan’s neighbours, including Elamathi. As he gave contradictory statements, the police questioned him further and he admitted to having committed the crime.
