Post-War British Art at Sotheby’s

Celebrating the very best in the British art scene over the past century, London Sotheby’s Modern & Post-War British Art Evening Sale is led by an exciting array of fresh-to-market works by some of the most successful and sought-after artists and sculptors of the past century.
The auction comprises of two sessions. The first on June 12 is titled “Howard Hodgkin: Working on Paper.” The session will reveal the scope, diversity and ultimately the great passion Hodgkin had for working on paper, according to the website of the auction, Sothebys.com.
Alongside stage designs for the Royal Ballet and Mark Morris Dance Group, commissions for projects such as the 2012 Olympic poster and book covers for his friends Julian Barnes and Susan Sontag, the auction will include a significant proportion of dazzling prints from the 1960s up to some of the last works Hodgkin produced. All the works in the sale are from his personal collection - each print is an artist’s proof and all the unique works are those that he retained in the studio.  
Proceeds from the sale will fund a complete collection of Hodgkin’s graphic work to be given to a museum, as well as supporting a new edition of the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné, which will feature 189 prints and many unique works on paper.
The second session on June 13 is “Modern & Post-War British Art Day Sale.” The sale will feature major and important works by the likes of Dame Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Stanley Spencer, L. S. Lowry, Winston Churchill, Ben Nicholson, William Scott and Patrick Caulfield.
