ALBANY - The state Legislature approved a ban on indoor tanning devices for New Yorkers under the age of 18.

New York could become the 16th state that restricts access to indoor tanning facilities if Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signs the legislation. The ultraviolet radiation from artificial tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of catching Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 59 percent, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

"Kids and tanning devices don't mix," Julie Hart, the group's government relations director, said in a statement. "Keeping kids away from dangerous indoor tanning devices is a no-brainer."

Nearly 5,000 people are diagnosed with Melanoma each year and skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the country, according to the Cancer Action Network.

State Sen. Phil Boyle, a Long Island Republican, who carried the bill in the state Senate, urged the governor to sign the bill into law.

The legislation, which passed the state Senate on Tuesday, was sent back to the state Assembly, which is responsible for delivering the bill to the governor.
