NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man was beaten to death inside a rehabilitation centre by his caretaker for urinating in front of him. The incident took place on Monday night in southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri and the accused has not been arrested yet, cops said. Two unidentified men who were with the caretaker are also on the run.

Police said they received a PCR call on Tuesday morning from a caretaker about an unconscious man. A team rushed him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead

A senior police officer said that the victim, Amit Bidhuri, was admitted into the centre by his wife on Monday evening, while he was still drunk. “He was addicted to alcohol, but wanted to quit that habit. We didn’t even force him to go to the rehab,” said Bidhuri’s brother, Saurabh. “He was admitted in another rehab earlier, but he had left after four days and came back home.”

After admitting Bidhuri, his wife had gone back home. The next day, his family got a call from the centre, informing them that Bidhuri had an argument with someone. When they reached the hospital, they were told that he had died.

Bidhuri was put up in a room under the guidance of his caretaker, the accused. The accused himself used to be an addict, and had been admitted in the centre by his family a month ago. A week ago, after his rehabilitation course was complete, the accused took up the job of a caretaker at the centre like many other former addicts.

Police said that the accused got angry when Bidhuri urinated on the wall and beat him up with his friends. When the victim lost consciousness, all three accused fled.

Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (southeast) said that a case has been registered. Police said that Bidhuri lived with his wife and three children – two girls and a four-month-old son.
