Thumbs up to the Ridgefield High School students for their sensitivity in organizing a Stand Up Against Hate event in Ballard Park Sunday. A panel discussion on prejudice, speakers, music and games drew attention to the need for tolerance and understanding. The event was a positive response to incidents of hate and anti-Semitism in town and elsewhere recently.

Thumbs up to the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury receiving a nearly $1 million grant from the state to repair the center’s aging roof and windows, replace heating and air conditioning systems and update its technology. The center, headquartered in downtown Danbury since 1999, has been working for two years in pursuit of the grant. The Women’s Center provides valuable services and crisis intervention to help end violence against women, men and children in the 14-town region.

Thumbs up to a recent national study which determined that 70 percent of women with the most common type of breast cancer can forgo chemotherapy as there’s no benefit to them. Chemotherapy, a standard treatment to attack cancer cells, can have debilitating side effects and in some cases can lead to serious illness. The National Institute of Health-supported study showed the overall five-year survival rate was 98 percent for those with an intermediate risk score who received only hormone therapy and 98.1 percent for those who received hormone therapy and chemotherapy. Validation studies are needed before the findings influence standard practice, but the early results are encouraging.

Thumbs up to the Aquarion Water Co. for taking a cautious approach despite local reservoirs being at almost 100-percent capacity. With unpredictable droughts in recent years, the utility is calling for permanent restrictions in most quarters, such as limiting lawn-watering to two days a week in Newtown, as well as Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich, Stamford and Westport. Even-numbered homes will be allowed outdoor water use on Sundays and Wednesdays, odd-numbered homes on Saturdays and Tuesdays. And watering is not allowed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thumbs down to those in Stamford who decided on the location of an otherwise striking statue of Marilyn Monroe in the famous subway-grate scene from the making of the 1954 film “The Seven Year Itch.” The image is indeed iconic and all in all pretty tame compared with the sorts of exposure commonplace in 2018. The statue itself is, as mentioned, striking. But, really, did no one think facing Marilyn’s derriere in the direction of the First Congregational Church across the street might strike some as offensive?

Thumbs up to the Danbury High School boys track and field team on winning the State Open last week, the first in seven years, and to Pomperaug High School freshman Katherine Wiser for capturing the 3,200 meters race in the girls’ outdoor track. A big thumbs up also to four Ridgefield High School teams — baseball, boys volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse — to reach the finals in state championships. The boys lacrosse team upset Darien to win the Class L honors on Saturday.
