PM Jacinda Ardern might induce labour if baby overdue video

Jacinda Ardern won't wait for her baby to come out, and will be induced if need be.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is not leaving things to chance. If her baby, due this Sunday, does not arrive soon, she says she may induce labour.

Ardern told The AM Show this morning that she was unlikely to allow nature to take its course if her pregnancy ran over time.

She was answering a question from host Duncan Garner about whether she would be back on the programme next week for her regular slot.

"Next week I'm officially well over," Arden said, in reference to her pregnancy.

Ardern is set to give birth at Auckland Hospital this weekend, with her partner Clarke Gayford by her side. She will take six weeks of leave before returning to work.

"They always say the first baby can be well overdue," noted co-host Amanda Gillies. "So you could be another two, three weeks."

"That is true. I'm not sure I'm going to let that happen," replied Ardern.

Duncan Garner asked if that meant she would be induced, when drugs are administered to an expectant mother to bring on labour.

"Induced, yep," said Ardern. "Out."

When Gillies asked if that might happen this weekend, Ardern said, "Not necessarily. I'm still playing it a bit by ear."
