Nagpur: Children between 8-14 years of age had a fun-filled learning experience as they kindled their thought process to understand the simple science existing in everyday life at a workshop organized by Expressive Arts, in association with Tgloo, at Crosswords, Civil Lines, on Tuesday.
Young and energetic science educators Karishma Manwani and Abhilash Khobragade conducted an interesting session with the kids as part of ‘Everyday Science’ workshop to trigger their minds, push them beyond their abilities and help them find their own approach towards finding scientific solutions.
After an ice-breaking segment, children were fragmented into different groups and were given a task. They had to build a structure which could hold a one litre water bottle using only newspapers, scissors and cello tape.
Manwani said, “The best part about this activity is that the kids are free to make mistakes. They will figure out the correct method only when they take the wrong path and use their logic to rectify their mistakes. They will come up with an error-free output on their own when they are given liberty of thoughts.”
After some failed attempts, the kids realized that the newspaper should be folded in a manner which makes it strong enough to bear the load. They finally understood the laws of physics while designing the structure.
Explaining the benefits of this technique to teach science, Khobragade said, “If we allow our kids to apply their concepts, their minds will grow, their observational skills will improve and their creativity will be enhanced.”
Manwani agreed and said, “A lot of information is bombarded on children in schools and not everything is relatable in real life. We need to adopt the new pattern to make them smarter and competitive.”
The workshop will continue at Crosswords till June 16.
