Flight UA-971 landed at Shannon Airport around 1.42 p.m. local time and was met by police and fire crew on the ground as reported by a leading news media agency.
Aircraft had been carrying 214 passengers. The crew members disembarked the plane and were taken into the terminal along with their luggage to undergo a security screening.
One of the spokesperson for Garda that is the regional police force mentioned to the media that the United flight had to be diverted to Shannon that is situated in midwest Ireland after the ‘discovery’ of a note relating to a bomb threat on board’.
As per a news media house, there was a message that was written on a surface in the lavatory of the aircraft that suggested the presence of an explosive.
A United spokesperson confirmed the events, releasing the following statement that read that United flight UA971 en route to Chicago from Rome had to be diverted to Shannon following a potential security concern. Additional security screenings would be performed on all customers and baggage, and they would work to get customers on their way to Chicago as quickly as possible.
