All Blacks great Dan Carter swapped an oval ball for one a little rounder when lining up with sporting stars and celebrities in a charity football match in Manchester last weekend.

Carter played for a Rest of the World XI against England in the 2018 Soccer Aid match at Old Trafford on Sunday (Monday NZ time) and proved his wand of a left foot can still produce magic.

England were leading 2-0 in the first half when Carter was out wide on the left and he precisely picked out Ireland's record goal scorer Robbie Keane, who took a heavy touch but managed to scramble the ball home.

The leg that helped dropkick the All Blacks to World Cup glory isn't bad at kicking a football either.

Carter's team was captained by Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt and featured the likes of former Manchester City star Yaya Toure, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, ex-England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, and they were partly managed by French football legend Eric Cantona and Harry Redknapp.

England later won on penalties after the match finished 3-3 and Carter faced an English side captained by singer Robbie Williams, who is performing at the World Cup's opening ceremony, that boasted former internationals like Michael Owen, Phil Neville, David Seaman and Wes Brown, as well as running great Mo Farah and ex-England cricket all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

Soccer Aid began in 2006 and is a biennial charity event raising money for Unicef.

Carter rubbed shoulders with some of football's biggest names in the week of training for the match, including Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and Dutch greats Clarence Seedorf, Edwin van der Sar, Jaap Stam and Patrick Kluivert, as well as former French stars Robert Pires and Claude Makelele.
