FHD hosts free self-defense class

Florida Hospital DeLand will host a free self-defense class at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, and at the same time and place on Monday, June 18. Retired Seminole County Sheriff's Deputy Wendell Bradford will teach participants how to defend themselves and how to decrease the risk of becoming a victim. Monthly health screenings in DeLand

Low-cost health screenings will be available from 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Florida Hospital DeLand, 701 W. Plymouth Ave. Multiple tests are available, including cholesterol, lipid panels, glucose and prostate screenings. 'Look Good, Feel Better' class offered

Florida Hospital Fish Memorial will host a free Look Good Feel Better class from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, for women who are undergoing cancer treatment. The class is designed for women who are experiencing hair loss and skin changes from chemotherapy and radiation, and teaches beauty techniques to help restore appearance and self-image during cancer treatments. The group meets at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Cancer Institute, 1055 Saxon Blvd., Orange City. RSVP is required. For information or to RSVP, call 800-227-2345.

Parkinson’s exercise class scheduled

A free exercise class for those with Parkinson’s disease is scheduled for 10:30-11:30 a.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Florida Hospital DeLand, Classrooms B and C, 701 W. Plymouth Ave., with the next class on Tuesday, June 19. The class will focus on balance, strength and mobility and requires a medical waiver signed by a physician. FHMMC plans Ormond Beach urgent care grand opening

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center will have a grand opening celebration from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday,June 14, for its Florida Hospital Centra Care urgent care facility at 1245 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach.

During this free event, attendees will receive tours of the new 5,200-square-foot facility while others enjoy rides on an inflatable mechanical surf board and a waterslide, as well as snow cones and prizes.

Florida Hospital Centra Care is the area’s only hospital-affiliated urgent care provider with both adult and pediatric-trained physicians available for families seven days a week.

Officially open to patients for care as of Monday, June 11, this facility is the 37th Florida Hospital Centra Care in Florida and the fifth in Volusia County. Other Florida Hospital Centra Care locations include Daytona Beach, DeLand, Orange City and Port Orange.

Centra Care offers on-site labs and other immediate healthcare services such as X-rays, EKG, stitches, physicals, blood pressure testing and immunizations.
