Power supply restored to 90 % of the town, say Tangedco officials

'Power restored to 90 percent of Udhagamandalam town' after many areas left in the dark for three whole days

Despite heavy rain continuing to cause disruptions to the electricity grid in parts of Udhagamandalam town, Tangedco officials said that power supply had been restored to 90 % of the town, with only minor works being left to be completed on Sunday.

However, six more tree falls were reported in the Nilgiris on Sunday, causing disturbances to the power grid for a few hours since Sunday morning. Many residents across the town complained of being left without electricity for almost three full days.

Tangedco officials and staff worked around the clock since midnight on Saturday trying to clear fallen trees. Officials were confident, however, that disruptions to power supply would become less frequent as the blustery winds which had been causing tree-falls, began dying down since Sunday afternoon.

While rain was sparse in Kotagiri and Coonoor, Udhagamandalam town received around 50 mm of rain since Saturday, while Gudalur received 64 mm. One vehicle was reportedly damaged in Gudalur due to a tree fall, while the Nilgiris district police released a list of helpline numbers local residents could call in case of emergencies related to tree falls and landslips.

Helpline

An official release from the police said that residents could reach the police via phone at 0423-2223828/ 2223807.

Boat rides at the Ooty Lake and Boat house were suspended on Sunday due to the rain.
