This past week two cats in need really grabbed my attention and I thought I would share each of their ‘tales’ here in hopes of finding them forever homes.

First, we have Wasabi! He is the brown and white cat with blue eyes. He’s about 6 years old. Wasabi found himself outside with nobody to take care for him, through no fault of his own, but is now in a temporary foster home. He is a super cool cat with a big personality and is very friendly and loving. He has a unique appearance with chocolate brown and white markings and blue eyes; very similar to a snowshoe cat.

Wasabi is now fixed and up-to-date on shots but was diagnosed by the vets as having feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

According to the ASPCA website, symptoms of FIV can take years to present but eventually can damage the cat’s immune system. Infected cats can live a comfortable life indoors in a stress-free environment. FIV positive cats also can live with other FIV positive cats or non-infected cats as FIV is most commonly passed from one cat to another by deep bite wounds from fighting outside. Fixed, indoor cats would typically not be aggressively fighting like that in territorial disputes, causing deep wounds.

Wasabi has had a rough life so far and it’s time for him to have a happy and loving indoor home. If you are interested in adopting or fostering him, email volusiacountypets@gmail.com for an adoption form.

Our second cat is named Socks and also is about 6 years old. Socks is a very pretty tuxedo cat with fluffy black fur and tail, and lovely white whiskers and bib. Socks’s owner passed away last summer and ended up fending for himself outdoors until a kind neighbor took him in. Unfortunately, Socks has not taken well to her own male cats (he may be good with a different male cat you never know) and so she cannot keep him.

Socks also is very friendly and loves to cuddle and follow you around. He is fixed and up-to-date on shots and in good health. It would be wonderful for him to find a loving new home with an owner, and also I know his former owner would have wanted that. Unfortunately, many animals end up on the street or in an animal shelter when their owners die. So paws crossed for a happy outcome for Socks. If you are interested in adopting Socks, email volusiacountypets@gmail.com for an adoption form.

Sadly, we have a pet overpopulation problem here in Volusia County and the best way to stop it is for people to get their animals fixed. There are plenty of places to get pets fixed at reasonable prices in Volusia County, including the Halifax Humane Society’s Redinger Clinic on Mason Avenue in Daytona Beach. Call them at 386-310-4935 to make an appointment.

Volusia County Animal Services also accepts appointments for reduced fee spay/neuter clinic on 386-323-3575 for residents of unincorporated areas of Volusia County and the cities of DeLand and South Daytona. Residents also must show proof of income and meet income eligibility guidelines.
