Diljit Dosanjh plays the role of drag flicker Sandeep Singh in Soorma trailer.

Many would remember him as the man who brought India gold at the 2009 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament after 13 long years. A few may even remember his back story. For the rest of us, the story of India’s most fierce drag flicker, Sandeep Singh, is all set to come alive with Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Soorma on the big screen soon. Soorma trailer came out on Monday and shared Sandeep’s journey during the important milestones of his life. However, there were moments when the love story of Diljit and Taapsee Pannu, who plays a hockey player too, appeared to be taking over the narrative.

Sandeep is regarded as the most impressive drag-flickers of all time with drag speed of over 145 km/hr, which led to his nickname, ‘Flicker Singh’. Sharing the trailer on Twitter, Diljit wrote, “#Soorma Trailer ..Agar Acha Lagge Toh Plz Share”

In the Soorma trailer, it is not hockey but Taapsee’s character who catches Diljit’s fancy. He joins hockey practice for her sake, only to be thrown out soon as he isn’t dedicated to the sport. How he falls in love with the sport, gets to play for his own country and loses it all when he is paralysed after being shot forms an important part of the film. Refusing to let the tragedy define his life, Sandeep bounces back and writes his own success story.

Talking about essaying the role of Sandeep Singh, Diljit had earlier said in a press statement, “I feel proud to be part of Soorma, a biopic made on Sandeep Singh. Sandeep has never failed to make India proud, be it on field or off it, he keeps setting the benchmark higher. I knew that he was the captain but didn’t know he was shot on his back. When I started playing hockey, I realised the entire game relies on your back- you have to bend to play it. So the pressure is double. What I didn’t know was, how a man who was shot, stood up, recovered and made a world record.”

Soorma is produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions, Chitrangda Singh, and Deepak Singh which will release on July 13.
