HYDERABAD: Though Telangana tops the list of states in consumption of meat, skin processing units or tanneries are very few in number.

Currently, there are only three such units operating in the state while most of the skin is exported to other states, particularly Tamil Nadu.

With an estimated number of 1.73 lakh sheep and goats, 91 lakh heads of cattle (buffalos and cows) and about 360 slaughterhouses, the state had the potential to become a big producer of leather but, due to strict pollution norms, only three units in the state are managing to function and all the three are located at Konoor in Bhongir district.

“Upgrading the units is necessary in order to facilitate the use of common effluent treatment plant (CETP). The processing through such plant will enable chemical residuals to be processed in a safe manner,” said D Srinivas Naik, managing director of TSLIPCO.
