Administrative sanction for ₹3.3 crore has been accorded for the Killipalam-Chala-East Fort road.
The amount has been sanctioned for building drains to prevent flooding and renovating the road. As soon as technical sanction is received, tendering would be completed and construction work will get under way, V.S. Sivakumar, MLA, said in a statement here.
The busy Chala market is the city’s commercial hub, origins of which could be dated back to medieval times. However, the road that runs through its heart is narrow. Buildings are tightly packed together on either side of the road.
This brings with it its own problems. Every year, when the rains arrive, the road that lacks proper drainage facilities gets flooded in no time, putting shoppers to much hardship and affecting business.
The statement said administrative sanction for ₹2 crore had been given for the Beemapally-Poonthura road, and ₹1.7 crore for the Ambalathara-Poonthura road. Work would begin as soon as related procedures were completed.
The Public Works Department had submitted an estimate of ₹4 crore to the government to make the battered Attakulangara-Killipalam road motorable. Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran had been requested to give administrative sanction at the earliest so that work could begin, Mr. Sivakumar said.
Work on the ₹2.25-crore Ayurveda College-Kunnumpuram road was apace. A meeting of officials concerned would be convened to restart work on the Vallakkadavu and Perunelly bridges, he said.
These works were originally proposed during the tenure of the previous UDF government.
