A person is dead and another injured after a crash between a ute and a small tractor on State Highway 8, between Pleasant Point and Timaru in South Canterbury.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from Pleasant Point and Washdyke had responded about 8am.
In a statement, police confirmed the tractor driver had died at the scene.

St John communications advisor Gerard Campbell said another person, whose age and gender is unknown, has been taken to Timaru Hospital with moderate injuries.
A witness at the scene told Stuff that the tractor was on its side and another vehicle, which appeared to be a ute, had suffered damage.
The crash was on the Pleasant Point Highway near the intersection with a private road called Handys Lane. The spokesman said diversions are in place at Levels Plain Rd and Falvey Rd while police work at the crash site.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the tractor on SH8 this morning before the crash.
"The tractor was heading towards Timaru, and we're interesting in any sightings between 7am and 8am," the statement said.
