Salem: A day after the flat of a cement dealer at Alagapuram in the city was burgled and about 200 sovereigns of gold jewels were robbed, police started the probe on Monday by questioning maids and a watchman.
According to the Alagapuram police, on the early hours of Sunday, the house of P Shanmugasundaram, 48, was broke open by unidentified miscreants and the jewels worth Rs 50 lakh and some cash kept in an almirah were stolen. The incident came to light when Shanmugasundaram, who was away to Erode with his family, returned home on Sunday evening. “He found the front door open. He rushed inside the house and found items were stolen,” said a police officer.

The police reached the spot and questioned neighbours of movements of strangers in the locality. Later, they registered a case. On Monday, they questioned four women, including the maid of Shanmugasundaram’s house, and a security person working in the building. They also collected CCTV footages from cameras in the area.
