Coimbatore: Two unidentified men snatched nine sovereigns of mangalsutra from the wife of district munsif, Sulur, on Sunday night.
Police said K Selvapandi, the munsif at the district munsif court, Sulur, had gone to a shopping mall on Avinashi road on Sunday evening in a scooter with wife S Maheswari, 40, of Sivagami Nagar at Sulur, and son. When they reached near Sulur lake while returning home, two unidentified men followed them in a motorcycle and snatched the gold mangalsutra from Maheswari and managed to escape. Based on Maheswari’s complaint, the Sulur police have registered a case. There were no CCTV cameras in the area.

“We have formed three special teams to nab the chain snatchers. Our special teams have been collecting the CCTV footage from the neighbouring areas,” said Pa Moorthy, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district.

He added that to curb crimes in Sulur and surrounding areas, the rural police sought help from the local leaders in Sulur town panchayat and a meeting was convened with the leaders at district police office on Saturday.

Moorthy said that Sulur town panchayat has 17 wards and the leaders from Sulur promised the police officials that they would give seven youths from each ward for night patrolling. “We would pick one person from each ward per day and will assign them along with the police personnel. Our police personnel would conduct surprise vehicle check in Sulur and surrounding areas and we have been taking steps to curb crimes in Sulur,” said Moorthy.

He also added that 10-armed reserve police personnel and 15 newly-recruited police constables were deputed at Sulur on temporary basis to curb crimes.
