LONDON Fire Brigade have declared 58 firefighters scrambled to a hospital on The Ridgeway in Enfield, London following the outbreak of a blaze.

A total of 45 people were evacuated from hospital wards before the Brigade arrived.

A further 7 people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

London Fire Brigade said in a statement: “Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a hospital on The Ridgeway in Enfield.”

They added: “A small part of the ground floor of a two-floored building is currently alight.”

The emergency service was called at 10.11pm.

Fire crews from Enfield, Southgate, Edmonton, Chingford and Barnet fire stations were present.

One witness tweeted: “Loads of fire engines, police and support units heading to Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield on the Ridgeway.”

London Fire Brigade have said the blaze is now under control.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Chase Farm hospital is run by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

The site is made up of an acute hospital, an adult mental health unit managed by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust, and Chase Village, a home for the mentally ill.

In 2008, a fire broke out the secure hospital unit forcing 70 patients and staff to evacuate.

The fire caused £60 million worth of damage.

The site is currently undergoing a major redevelopment set to make it the most digitally advanced hospital under the NHS.

Construction is scheduled to be completed this summer, with the hospital scheduled to open in Autumn.
