CEDAR RAPIDS — Work installing new railroad safety gates will close down Second Avenue SE traffic at Fourth Street Tuesday.

Second Avenue SE should reopen to westbound traffic only on Wednesday, according to a Cedar Rapids Monday news release. The avenue is expected to remain open to westbound traffic only between Third and Fourth streets until Union Pacific Railroad completes the installation of gates and arms.

Future closures will take place June 19 and 20, according to the release.

The addition of gates and arms along the Union Pacific Railroad line downtown could allow for the designation of a “quiet zone” in the area. Such designation allows for reduced train whistle use within the zone.
