At least 13 people, including three children, have been killed as heavy rains continue to lash Kerala.

The much anticipated monsoon made its landfall last week and the showers, which started off on a slow pace, have gradually spread all over the state.

The monsoon showers intensified over the weekend accompanied by strong south western winds. The heavy rains and strong winds created widspread damage in the state.

Most of the deaths have been due to electrocution, dorwning or tree falls.

Idukki and Wayand are the worst-affected districts and the situation remains particularly alarming in the hilly terrains of the district.

In Wayanad, an approach road to a newly built bridge was completely washed away. In many areas power supply has been disrupted after huge trees fell over power cables.

The state disaster management board has opened control rooms in all 14 districts to take stock of the situation.

The state weather department has predicted that rain and winds will continue until May 13 in Kerala.
