Shiv Sena mocks Maoist plot to target Modi, dubs it laughable

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena on Monday dubbed as laughable an alleged Maoist plot to target PM Narendra Modi, saying the conspiracy did not seem legitimate and appeared to be like the story of "a horror film".

In remarks laced with sarcasm, an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna said high-profile leaders ought to be provided elaborate security irrespective of lakhs of people dying in attacks by insurgents. Making light of alleged threats to the Prime Minister and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, it said the issue was being milked for political purposes.

A letter purportedly suggesting a plot to assassinate Modi and Fadnavis had been seized by Pune police during raids earlier this month which led to the detention of activists, academics and journalists who were described as Maoist sympathisers.

Modi's security is as strong as Mossad (Israel's intelligence agency) and it is virtually impossible for anybody to penetrate it, the Sena said. Similarly, Fadnavis has converted the state secretariat into a fortress, where the movement of the common man has become difficult, it alleged."In such a situation, the plot to assassinate them seems mysterious and (like) the story of a horror film," it added.

It quoted contents of the purported Maoist letter, which said, "Modi has succeeded in forming governments in 15 states. If this continues, the organisation will be in trouble. And thus, Modi should be eliminated."

"All this was revealed by the police, which seems laughable," said the Saamna. On the one hand, Naxalites plan to procure M-4 assault rifles along with four lakh rounds of ammunition, and on the other hand, they leave behind a plot as evidence, the editorial stated.
