NEW DELHI: Ongoing monsoon will progress normally during the next two days, but then there will be ‘pause’ for a week from Thursday onwards. It will, however, not affect the normal date of onset of monsoon in Delhi and the capital is most likely to get a regular seasonal shower from last week of this month.
Though there are chances that the situation (pause for a week) may delay the onset of monsoon in certain parts including
Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and
Gujarat, senior scientist of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), D S Pai, said such a situation was “very common” in monsoon and it wouldn’t affect the overall rainfall in the country.
“It’s only due to low pressure in north-eastern part and it means the region and Bangladesh will get good rains during the period of pause,” he said.
Asked about its impact on Delhi, Pai told TOI that the “onset is expected on its normal date (June 29) with a variation of +\- 2 or 3 days” — it means monsoon will hit the city (which saw pre-monsoon shower on Saturday) in last week of June.
He said, “There is no sign of worry as monsoon comes in phases. The monsoon, as of now, is quite normal. It will progress normally after a pause of a week or 10 days.”
The country’s weather agency, IMD, in its latest update on monsoon on Monday said that the conditions were becoming favourable for further advance of south-west monsoon into some more parts of Odisha, remaining parts of the north-west Bay of Bengal, north-eastern states and some parts of West Bengal and Sikkim during next 48 hours.
“Thereafter, no further advance is likely during next one week due to probable weakling of monsoon flow,” said the IMD.
It noted that the monsoon has already advanced further into some more parts of Marathwada,
Vidarbha,
Chhattisgarh, some parts of Gangetic West Bengal and some parts of Assam and
Meghalaya.
