LUDHIANA: Panic gripped the residential area of Ghumar Mandi on Sunday evening when fire broke out in a furniture godown, behind the residence of
district Congress president and councillor Gurpreet Gogi. The adjoining houses were vacated to avoid any untoward incident. The fire brigade rushed to the spot and controlled the situation in a few minutes.
Though it was a minor incident, thick black smoke coming out of the building’s fourth floor created panic among residents of the area. As some residents claimed a cylinder had exploded, onlookers were seen shooting videos from their rooftops. Fire officials controlled the fire with two tenders. One of the officials claimed workers were at work when the sheds and a wall collapsed due to intense heat. He said there was no loss of life or injury to anybody in the incident.
Meanwhile, Gogi said he first asked people in the lane to vacate their houses, and also brought out LPG cylinders from inside. He said the fire brigade reached 15 minutes after the incident.
