The sixth edition of ‘Happy Street,’ an initiative of the Madurai Corporation, saw cheer, dance and joy on one of Madurai’s busiest roads, Gokhale Road, on Sunday. People of all age groups actively participated in the events.
Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, who was the special invitee for the event, said that the initiative was one of Madurai’s highlights.
“We may not remember the times we were cooped up in our house but we will recollect the times we came out on the streets to have fun. ‘Happy Street’ helps in keeping children away from their phones and other gadgets. It gives them a place to run around and play- a rare sight these days. Parents must thank the corporation for organising such a programme,” he said.
He also bade farewell to Madurai, as he has been transferred as Inspector General of Police, Special Investigation Division, Crime Branch CID.
Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Sekhar said the initiative was a fantastic platform to discuss key civic issues such as dengue and waste segregation. He added that it was refreshing to see young and the old enjoying a Sunday morning.
The street was full of people playing games, exercising and learning about interesting initiatives taking place in the city.
A nearly 500-metre stretch of the Gokhale Road, where all motor vehicles were banned, sported a carnival atmosphere from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Hundreds took part in badminton, table tennis, board games, yoga and cycling.
