Dhadak trailer has Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter giving a new twist to an old story

When Karan Johar’s Dharma Production decided to remake Sairat for Hindi audience with Janhvi Kapoor and Ishan Khatter in the lead, film lovers wanted to know if the original’s themes of class and caste distinctions will be maintained. While we will have to wait till Dhadak releases for that, Dhadak trailer that came out Monday is definitely a step in the right direction. The class distinction is obvious, as is the power that politics vests in you.

Janhvi’s character Parthavi is powerful and confident, to the point of being brazen. Belonging to a political family, she knows what she wants in Dhadak trailer. Ishaan’s Madhukar is a middle-class guy in the film set in Rajasthan. Reticent and yet in love with Janhvi’s character, Ishaan knows that discovery of their nascent love will end in disaster. False cases and police brutality later, the two elope but can you survive on just love?

At three minutes, the trailer seems a tad too lengthy, but Janhvi and Ishaan’s cute banter make it interesting. Almost two minutes are spent on Ishaan’s pursuit of Janhvi and, thereafter, their innocent and sweet romance. Peppered with colourful clothes, beautiful locales of Rajasthan and Ajay-Atul’s melodious background music, the trailer makes the film look promising.

Produced by Karan Johar, Dhadak marks the Bollywood debut of Ishaan who was earlier seen in Iranian auteur Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds. This is Janhvi’s first film.

KJo tweeted the trailer and wrote, “Here it is, with love and a thumping heartbeat. The trailer of #Dhadak #Janhvi #Ishaan @apoorvamehta18 @ShashankKhaitan @DharmaMovies @ZeeStudios_ @kuttysujay.”

Shashank also tweeted Monday morning, “A few hours to go for the trailer launch of #Dhadak ... feeling excited and nervous ... am sure my bachchas #janvikapoor #IshaanKhattar must be feeling the butterflies in their tummy ... @karanjohar thank you for giving us this opportunity and love you ... you are simply the best.”

Dhadak is directed by Shashank Khaitan and will hit the screens on July 20. It is a remake of Marathi hit Sairat which traced the story of two teenagers battling the rigid caste system for their love. Janhvi steps into Rinku Rajguru’s shoes while Ishaan takes upon the role essayed by Akash Thosar in the Marathi film.

Karan earlier told Hindustan Times, “We are honoured and excited to collaborate with Zee Studios on the official adaptation of the immensely celebrated and loved Sairat. Dhadak is Shashank’s third post his Dulhania series and is a true labour of love. We present Janhvi and Ishaan and can’t wait for the viewers to experience their innocence and magic on celluloid.”

A few days ago, Janhvi Kapoor said in an interview to Vogue that her mother Sridevi, who died in Dubai this February, watched the rushes of Dhadak. “She was very technical about it. The first thing she told me was the things I needed to improve — she felt the mascara was smudged and it really bothered her. The second half has to be different, she told me… ‘You can’t wear anything on your face.’ That’s all she told me, but she was happy,” Janhvi said.
