Accident victim’s organs harvested

A 37-year-old woman, S. Amudha, who was declared brain dead, gave a new lease of life to at least four people on Sunday with the harvesting of her kidneys, liver, lungs and corneas.

According to Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, where her organs were harvested, Amudha met with an accident on Sunday when she was riding pillion on a two-wheeler with her husband and son. The family was returning home in Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli after attending a function at a relative’s house in Krishnapuram.

Following treatment at a hospital near Palayamkottai, she was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Meenakshi hospital on Friday. Hospital sources said that her condition deteriorated and she was declared brain dead on Sunday by doctors after performing necessary tests at stipulated intervals.

A statement issued by the hospital said that Amudha’s grieving husband Sundararajan, who works in a sweet shop, readily consented to donate her organs.

After obtaining necessary permissions from the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu and identifying organ recipients as per procedures, the organs were harvested, the statement added.

One of the kidneys and the liver were was donated to two patients at MMHRC. Another kidney was sent to a recipient at Apollo Hospitals in Tiruchi.

The lungs was sent to a recipient at Gleneagles Global Hospitals in Chennai.

The corneas were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital here.

The police had made traffic arrangements to transfer the lungs from MMHRC to the airport to take it to Chennai, hospital sources added.
