With heavy downpour continuing in the Nilgiris for the fourth consecutive day, Tangedco officials have given prior notice to the district administration that the sluice gates of the Kundah Dam may need to be opened if the rain continues.
Speaking to The Hindu, a senior Tangedco official said that the 89-foot dam, located more than 5,000 feat above mean sea level, is almost full due to the increased inflow over the last few days. “As a result, water is being released to the Geddai powerhouse II for power generation.
By doing this, we are stabilising the water levels in the dam by ensuring that the inflow does not exceed the amount of water being used for power generation purposes,” said the official.
The official also added that the release of water from the dam will pose no threat to the lives or property of people living downstream.
“There is only one small settlement near the Mulli checkpost where the water from the dam will flow through, and that settlement too will be completely safe, with the excess water flowing into the Pilloor dam after passing through some reserve forests,” said the
“We have given prior warning to the district administration that if the rain continues, and the dam gets filled to capacity, we may have to open the sluice gates to release the water,” added the official.
