IIT JEE Advanced Result 2018: Anand Kumar’s Super 30 claims 26/30 this year

As many as 26 of the 30 students trained by famed coaching institute Super 30 have cleared the JEE-Advanced 2018 for admission to India’s premiere IITs, its founder Anand Kumar said on Sunday.

Onirjit Goswami, Suraj Kumar, Yash Kumar and Prashant Das — all from extremely modest backgrounds — are among those who have cleared the test.

Onirjit, son of Devkumar Goswami, who works in a small factory in Kanpur, says due to financial hardships, he could not even think of IITs. One day he read an article about Super 30 in a newspaper and reached Anand Kumar’s house. That was the beginning, and he went on to realise his dream.

Suraj Kumar’s parents are uneducated, but they are overwhelmed with the success of their son. His father is a landless farmer.

A resident of Giridih in Jharkhand, Suraj says: “When I told my father this morning that I had qualified for IIT, my father kept saying ITI. He did not even know what I was preparing for.”

Suraj said he will help student from underprivileged sections of the society after becoming an engineer.

Yash Kumar’s father is a salesman in a refrigerator and cooler shop. “The way Anand Sir teaches us mathematics, solving problems in multiple ways, is enjoyable. Qualifying for IIT is one thing, but now my interest in mathematics has also grown immensely,” he said, adding that he wanted to something innovative after becoming engineer.

Prashant Das, father of Suryakant Das, is a peon in a private school. Being in a school, he realized the power of education and wanted his son to study hard. Suryakant says that it was at Super 30 that his life took a new turn, as he developed self-belief. “After doing my engineering, I will support Super 30 for helping more and more students like me,” he said.

Famous for mentoring students mostly from the underprivileged sections of the society and with indifferent schooling free of cost for nearly a year through a residential programme, Super 30, in its 16-year journey starting 2002, has so far sent 422 students to IIT.

Though none of them have been ranked on top, Anand said it did not matter much for the students as their journey had just begun.

“I am not in race with anyone. Many of the students are first-generation learners in their families and coming this far, means transformation in their lives. Having come from a difficult background, it is the improvement in their approach towards life that matters for the students,” he said.

Anand said one thing common in all the successful students was their passion and unwavering devotion to excel with little bit of support in the form of opportunity and atmosphere at Super 30, in which his entire family is involved.

“They know it could usher in real change for them and spare them from the ordeal they have seen their parents undergo,” he said, thanking his teachers and family members for their support.

On the four who did not make it, Anand said two of them had left Super 30 mid-way after making it to other competitions. “Two others had also worked hard, but not making it to JEE-Advanced is not a big letdown for them,” he said.

Thrice in 2008, 2009 and 2010, all 30 students of Super 30 had made it to IIT. Last year again, all 30 students had cracked the JEE-Advanced.

A film on Super 30 starring Hrithik Roshan in the role of Anand Kumar and directed by Vikas Bahl, is being filmed and is expected to hit cinemas by January next year.
