BENGALURU: Just one year after Congress leader G Parameshwara resigned from the Home Minister’s post to take care of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) as its president, the Koratagere MLA finds himself donning multiple hats in the new JD(S)-Congress government.
Parameshwara has been given charge of Bengaluru development and Home ministry in addition to his role as Deputy Chief Minister and the KPCC chief. All these posts individually require full-time attention, especially the post of Deputy CM and KPCC president because of the turmoil the coalition government is currently witnessing.
While Congress is likely to appoint a new KPCC president, it is unlikely that Parameshwara will be asked to part with any of his other portfolios. According to experts, this may be too much for one person to handle. “One person handling these many responsibilities will be too much for an individual,” Professor Muzaffar Azadi, a political analyst and a Political Science professor told The New Indian Express. “The city is growing rapidly. Bengaluru’s problems are different from the rest of the state. It requires special attention — from garbage to traffic.
As Home Minister, he is also responsible for the maintenance of Law and Order across the state, which is also a very big responsibility,” he added.
Prof Azadi said that as KPCC president and Deputy CM, Parameshwara may not be able to focus much on the city development as it requires someone who can respond quickly to the problems and issues.
A Congress councillor, who did not want to be named, said the Bengaluru Development portfolio should have been given to a leader from the city as out of 27 assembly constituencies, Congress has won 14. “Dinesh Gundu Rao, Ramalinga Reddy, N A Haris or George would have been apt. Parameshwara, who is an MLA from Koratagere, has to look after his constituency too. It ’s difficult for him to do justice to so many tasks,” he added.
A former minister said it might look fancy to hold two important portfolios at the same time, but it is not easy to handle them. “The high command should have consulted senior leaders before taking a decision to give Home and Bengaluru Development to one minister,” he added.
