Customs backstop could still be in place in 2022, minister suggests

A temporary customs arrangement with the European Union could still be in place in 2022, a Cabinet minister has suggested.

David Lidington declined to say whether a customs "backstop" deal will be over by the end of 2021, hinting it could still be in place during the next election.

Asked whether the backstop deal would be over by June 2022, the Minister for the Cabinet Office said that was Theresa May’s “intention” and his “hope”.

“Everybody is working towards getting this sorted as soon as we possibly can,” Mr Lidington told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.
