The General Data Protection Regulation, which came into effect last month, may cause businesses to pay cyber ransom demands from criminals as they could be a cheaper option than high GDPR fines.
George Kurtz, chief executive of cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, said that “the price of admission of ransomware just went up” after the introduction of GDPR.
Ransomware is malicious software spread by criminals that locks computers and files until businesses or individuals pay a cyber ransom in order to unlock the encrypted data.
