Day 4 Review: Kusal Mendis led a strong Sri Lankan second innings effort but West Indies still held the advantage at stumps on day four of the first Test at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on Saturday. Set a daunting target of 453 when the hosts declared their second innings at 223 for seven just after lunch, the visitors reached 176 for three by the close with Mendis unbeaten on 94. They require another 277 runs on the final day and will be hoping their captain Dinesh Chandimal, who retired unwell on 15 in the afternoon session, can resume his innings to bolster a team that looked completely out of contention at the start of the day's play.
Given that the world record for the highest successful run chase in the fourth innings of a Test match is 418 –- set by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003 -– the odds are very much stacked against the Sri Lankans, especially with the pitch offering more variable bounce that could prove increasingly hazardous on the final day. However, if Mendis can replicate the determination he showed through nearly four hours at the crease and get the support from his teammates, starting with nightwatchman Lahiru Gamage, then a draw at the very least still remains a possibility.
His innings has not been without incident, though, as he would have been given out caught behind off fast bowler Shannon Gabriel when on six had West Indies captain Jason Holder opted for a television referral of the not out ruling given on the field. Mendis, who has so far faced 186 deliveries and struck two sixes and nine fours, was also dropped on 42 by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo. It was Bishoo who claimed the final wicket of the day just before bad light ended play when he had Roshen Silva caught and bowled off a leading edge.
Gabriel had earlier despatched Mendis's opening partner Kusal Perera to a first slip catch by Devon Smith in the fourth over of the innings and after Chandimal left the field with his personal score on 15. Former skipper Angelo Mathews added 74 runs with the resolute Mendis until he fell to a leg-side catch by Dowrich off Holder for 31. Earlier, having pushed the lead beyond the 400-run mark in the morning session when they lost three wickets and added a further 78 runs, including Kieran Powell for a top score of 88, West Indies batted for an additional 15 minutes in the afternoon session before Holder declared. It was the first time since the drawn 1985 fixture against New Zealand in Georgetown, Guyana that the West Indies had declared in both innings of a Test match.
Most of the attention in the morning session surrounded the prospect of Powell reaching a fourth Test century. Impressing with his elegant stroke play in reaching 64 overnight, the left-hander looked well on course to reach three figures but an error of judgement brought an end to his innings as he failed to get to the pitch off an attempted leg-side flick off spinner Dilruwan Perera and substitute fielder Jeffrey Vandersay took a good catch diving forward at midwicket. Fast-medium bowler Lahiru Kumara again led the Sri Lankan effort with figures of three for 40 to finish with seven wickets in the match.
Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)
Right then! That is a quick wrap up on Day 5 - Windies needing less than 30 overs to take the 7 Sri Lankan wickets. Sunil Gavaskar reckons that this is a sign of the Windies' revival. The Lankans do not have too much time to regroup. The second Test begins on Thursday, 14th June, 2018 at Gros Islet. Join us at 10 am local (1400 GMT) for all the action from that Test. Until then, ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious Windies captain Jason Holder is extremely happy to start the series with a win. He feels that yesterday it was very tough for his bowlers to pick up wickets but still they tried hard. Praises his team overall for the spirited performance. Stresses that he was not worried after Stumps last evening as he believed that the pitch will get tougher to bat on. On Kieran Powell, Jason says that he has a lot of potential and wants him to be more consistent. Adds that he was disappointed with Powell not getting a century. On his viewpoints about his team's performance, Holder says that he will come down very hard on his team for the chances they missed as well. But also praises his fast bowlers for bowling consistently fast and the spinners doing well today.
SHANE DOWRICH HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his first innings ton. He admits that it is a very good feeling. On the pitch, he says that the batsmen had to work for runs and there was plenty for the bowlers. On his own thought process, he says that he just stuck to the basics. On the plans and preparation in general, he stresses on being consistent and praises his coach Floyd Reifer for his continuous inputs which helped him in his Test while batting.
Sri Lankan captain, Dinesh Chandimal, blames the poor fielding on Day 1, dropping crucial chances, for the defeat. But is quick to add that they need to make a turnaround soon. Looks at the positives in Kusal Mendis' knock and Lahiru Kumara's bowling in both innings. Praises the Windies for playing outstanding cricket throughout the five days. On Dhananjaya de Silva's possible inclusion for the second Test, Chandimal hints that it might well be a possibility, especially since he has played at number 3 in the last 4-5 matches.
Now to the Windies' bowling. It has been a while since we have seen quick bowlers taking wickets for the home side. Bouncing the batsmen out, hitting them in the rib cage, then gloves and eventually making life uncomfortable. The seamers picked 8 wickets in the first innings while the last day was for the spinners - this is only the SECOND TIME that Sri Lanka have lost 7 wickets to spinners in a Test inning outside Asia. Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase being the beneficiaries - the latter especially striking twice in that last over before Lunch, removing Chandimal and Dickwella. Really disappointing for the Lankans. Stay tuned for the presentation.
Plenty of bowling positives for Sri Lanka initially, with Lahiru Kumara snapping up a 4-fer but then he got no support from the rest. In the second innings too, Kumara was the only one to be talked about. Slyly, Windies prepared a track which had lot of bounce and pace, not much spin and effectively negated Herath. Result? He got only 3 wickets in the entire match.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka probably smelt a chance when they had the Windies at 75/3 but then Kieran Powell kept them at bay. Then with the bat, apart from Kusal Mendis who scored a spectacular century, there was nothing much to talk about the batting again. They are missing someone who can grind it out in the middle.
The first day probably summed up the situation for Sri Lanka. They had the Windies on the mat, at 147/5 but allowed the home side to cross 400, not to mention the numerous dropped catches. Then the batting did not justify itself either, folding up for 185.
A Test win after 10 years for Windies against Sri Lanka. This is also their biggest win against Sri Lanka in Tests and also their biggest against any opponent in terms of runs, at Port Of Spain in this format!
83.2 Chase to Kumara, OUT! That is the end of the innings and match! This was definitely out. Full and outside off, Kumara looked to defend but missed it. Dowrich fumbled and then took it on the second attempt. He appealed, umpire Kettleborough took his time but then raised his finger! Snickometer confirms an inside edge onto Kumara's pads. WINDIES WIN BY 226 RUNS! 226/10
Lahiru Kumara is the last man in...
83.1 Chase to Lakmal, OUT! Given caught behind! Lakmal is not happy at all. Outside off, Suranga looks to defend but misses. The keeper collects, appeals, so does Roston Chase and up goes the umpire's finger! Lakmal stands there disappointed, he perhaps wants the review but there is none. Replays indicate possible daylight between bat and ball. 226/9
82.6 D Bishoo to Lakmal, The batsman works it down the leg side. They pick up a single. 226/8
82.5 Bishoo to Lakmal, RUN OUT MISSED! Oh dear... Bishoo is embarrassed. Short and outside off, Lakmal slices it towards point. He is ball-watching while Dilruwan is already beside him to shake hands. Lakmal has no idea where his partner is and simply goes back. Dilruwan now runs back but is gone for all money. The throw is a simple one to the bowler but Bishoo simply does not collect! 225/8
82.4 D Bishoo to Lakmal, Full and outside off, solidly defended. 225/8
Suranga Lakmal is the new man in.
82.3 D Bishoo to Herath, OUT! Spin, bounce, edge and a catch. A proper leg spinner's dismissal. Full and around off, Herath lunges to defend but the ball spins in, bounces a touch, takes the inside edge and lobs straight to Shai Hope at short leg. Herath walks off even before the finger is raised. 2 wickets more... 225/8
82.2 D Bishoo to Herath, Around off, spinning in, Herath works it towards short leg. 225/7
82.1 D Bishoo to Perera, Full and outside off, Perera comes down the track and works it wide of mid on for a single. 225/7
81.6 R Chase to Perera, Gets it past short leg and earns a single. 224/7
81.5 R Chase to Perera, Full and outside off, DP comes down the track and looks to defend, getting a thick inside edge on his pads. 223/7
81.4 R Chase to Perera, This time he comes forward and works it wide of mid-wicket. 223/7
81.3 R Chase to Perera, Outside off, pushed to the off side. 223/7
81.2 R Chase to Perera, Very full and outside off, Dilruwan stays back to defend but the ball keeps low and goes off the outside edge past slip. 223/7
81.1 R Chase to Perera, Full and outside off, Perera comes forward to defend but is beaten. 223/7
Roston Chase continues...
80.6 D Bishoo to Herath, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 223/7
80.5 D Bishoo to Herath, Gives it air on off, Herath keeps it out. 223/7
80.4 D Bishoo to Herath, That stays low! Another tossed up delivery outside off, this one turns back in and also stays a touch low. Herath lunges forward to defend but is done in by the low bounce. Dowrich goes down low to collect it but fails to do so. 223/7
80.3 D Bishoo to Herath, Flighted ball on off, Rangana defends it onto the ground. 223/7
80.2 D Bishoo to Herath, BEATEN! Loopy ball outside off, Herath plays inside the line and gets beaten. 223/7
80.1 D Bishoo to Perera, Slightly shorter in length on middle, Dilruwan whips it through mid-wicket for a run. 223/7
We are back for what could probably be the last session of the game. Out come the players along with the umpire. Dilruwan Perera will be joined in the middle by Rangana Herath. Devendra Bishoo will continue his spell. Here we go...
... Day 5, Session 2 ...
What can Sri Lanka do now? Play for personal milestones, perhaps. This is that time when you see your numbers 8 and 9 play carefree cricket and get 40s and 50s. A clinical approach would be to guts it out, fight hard and drag it into the third session. But maybe, they might go for some quick runs and give us some entertainment. Join us back at 1240 local (1640 GMT).
Holder's decision to give Chase that over proved to work wonders. First Chandimal played a rash shot and then on the last ball, Dickwella was dismissed. That should probably seal the deal. There is not much batting left in the Lankan camp and there is plenty of time left in the day. 1-0 should not take long, I guess.
Spectacular session for the Windies. They have taken 4 wickets and conceded just 46 runs in a span of 26.2 overs. Gabriel struck the initial blow, removing Mendis early and then the final over of the session was a kind of madness from the visitors.
79.6 R Chase to Dickwella, OUT! LBW! There is no inside edge and the decision stays as it is! This is probably the fastest I have seen Roston Chase run - that was how plumb it looked. Full and around off, Dickwella looks to defend that, playing for the turn. But the ball skids on, goes past the bat and hits the pads. Umpire Kettleborough immediately raises his finger but Dickwella takes the review, probably more out of hope. Snickometer does not detect any inside edge while Hawk Eye shows it to be crashing into the stumps. THAT WILL BE LUNCH ON DAY 5! 222/7
Dickwella seems to be gone too! Umpire Kettleborough has raised his finger on an appeal regarding an LBW against the southpaw. A review has been taken but... there needs to be an inside edge for the decision to be turned down. Seems plumb.
79.5 R Chase to N Dickwella, Driven towards the mid off region. 222/6
79.4 R Chase to Dickwella, Tries the paddle again but this time, nearly scoops a catch to short leg. 222/6
79.3 R Chase to Dickwella, FOUR! Takes this on the full, reaches out and paddles it fine for a boundary! 222/6
Dilruwan Perera walks in at number 8, replacing his captain.
79.2 R Chase to Chandimal, OUT! Oh no, oh no, if you are a Sri Lankan fan. Oh my, oh my, what luck, if you are in the opposite camp. Chandimal has thrown it away. That too, with 6 minutes to Lunch. He played a poor shot at a similar juncture in the first innings but this is an atrocious one. Full and outside off, Chandimal comes down the track and has a wild hoick. He only gets a top edge which is taken near mid-wicket by Kraigg Brathwaite. Chandimal will be admonishing himself. It is not a bad ploy to attack the part-timer but then one needs to be careful as well. 218/6
79.1 R Chase to Chandimal, Full and outside off, solidly defended. 218/5
78.6 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Outside off, solidly defended. 218/5
78.5 D Bishoo to Dickwella, FOUR! WALLOP! A bit of a loop from Bishoo, Dickwella gets down and sweeps it powerfully over mid-wicket for a boundary. He gets his third and the stand is now worth 23. 218/5
78.4 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Landed outside off, Niroshan goes back and just about puts bat to ball as he looks to defend. 214/5
A bit more crowd coming in near the batsman. A silly point is being employed.
78.3 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Full and outside off, Dickwella reaches out and pushes it to the off side. 214/5
78.2 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 214/5
78.1 D Bishoo to N Dickwella, Full and outside off, driven straight to the bowler. 214/5
77.6 R Chase to Chandimal, Full and outside off, driven straight to cover. 214/5
77.5 R Chase to Chandimal, The batsman failed to make contact and was hit low on the pads. 214/5
77.4 R Chase to Chandimal, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 214/5
77.3 R Chase to Chandimal, Full and outside off, watchfully pushed back. 214/5
77.2 R Chase to Chandimal, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 214/5
77.1 R Chase to Chandimal, Full and outside off, Chandimal gets down to sweep but misses and is hit on the pads. There is an LBW appeal but it is denied as the impact was outside off. 214/5
Interesting. Holder goes to Roston Chase. 14 minutes to go to Lunch.
76.6 D Bishoo to Dickwella, A touch short, around off, Niroshan stays back and defends. 214/5
76.5 D Bishoo to Dickwella, On middle and leg, this is flicked towards short leg, 214/5
76.4 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Outside off, on a length, Dickwella looks to defend but there is extra bounce and he fends it off in an awkward manner. 214/5
76.3 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Similar ball, once again ND reaches out to push it towards point. 214/5
76.2 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Full and outside off, Niroshan reaches out and pushes it towards point. 214/5
76.1 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Tossed up outside off, Dickwella comes forward and defends. 214/5
75.6 K Roach to Chandimal, Around off, well blocked out. 214/5
75.5 K Roach to Chandimal, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 214/5
75.5 K Roach to Chandimal, NO BALL. Roach oversteps by a big margin and Chandimal tucks it behind square leg for a couple. 239 more to win. 214/5
Oh dear! Another instance of an edge not being picked! In Roach's previous over, on ball number 5 - meaning 73.5 - there was an edge! Strangely, no one heard it and subsequently no one appealed either!
75.4 K Roach to Chandimal, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 211/5
75.3 K Roach to Chandimal, The batsman defends it from within the crease. 211/5
75.2 K Roach to Chandimal, Stays back in his crease and blocks. 211/5
75.1 K Roach to Chandimal, Outside off, left alone. 211/5
74.6 D Bishoo to Dickwella, The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. 211/5
74.5 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Around off, solidly defended. 211/5
74.4 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Played to the point region by the batsman. 211/5
74.3 D Bishoo to D Chandimal, Comes down the track and drives it towards long off for a single. 211/5
74.2 D Bishoo to Chandimal, FOUR! The wrong 'un from Bishoo, but it is wrong in length as well. It is short and Chandimal heaves it over mid-wicket for a one-bounce boundary. 210/5
74.1 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, Chandimal lunges and defends. 206/5
73.6 K Roach to Dickwella, This one is let through to the keeper. 206/5
73.5 K Roach to Dickwella, Outside off, a play and a miss. 206/5
73.4 K Roach to Dickwella, Full and outside off, solidly blocked. 206/5
73.3 K Roach to Dickwella, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 206/5
73.2 K Roach to N Dickwella, FOUR! Better from Roach. He angles this from around the wicket and forces Dickwella back in his crease. Then he gets the ball to straighten and induces an outside edge as Niroshan looks to defend. But it goes along the ground and beats gully to the third man fence. 206/5
73.1 K Roach to Dickwella, FOUR! HANDSOME! Finally some runs for Sri Lanka. A confident-looking shot. Full and outside off, Dickwella leans and drives it through the covers. No stopping that. 200 UP FOR THE LANKANS. Can this pair see this session off? 202/5
72.6 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Beaten! Full and outside off, Chandimal looks to defend but the ball spins away sharply to beat the outside edge. 198/5
72.5 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Very full outside off, DC dead-bats it. 198/5
72.4 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, Dinesh comes down the track and pushes it straight to cover. 198/5
72.3 D Bishoo to Chandimal, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 198/5
72.2 D Bishoo to Dickwella, The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads for a single. 198/5
72.1 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Full and outside off, Dickwella looks to sweep but misses. 197/5
71.6 K Roach to Chandimal, The batsman rocks onto the back foot and punches the ball. 197/5
71.5 K Roach to Chandimal, On middle and leg, worked to the leg side. 197/5
71.4 K Roach to Chandimal, Nearly a no ball. Roach is coming from well wide of the crease and is almost touching the return crease with his right foot. In this case, his toe touches the ground and then the heel makes contact with the return crease. Hence, not a no ball. Coming to the delivery, it is pitched on a good length outside off, comes in a bit and is left alone. 197/5
71.3 K Roach to Chandimal, Outside off, jags back sharply, Chandimal is squared up and pushes it back awkwardly. 197/5
71.2 K Roach to Chandimal, Outside off, on a length, pushed towards cover. 197/5
71.1 K Roach to Dickwella, On middle and leg, tucked towards deep backward square leg for a single. 197/5
A change from the Pavilion End. Kemar Roach replaces Miguel Cummins. Holder is giving the batsman something to think about - two fielders on the leg side - in the deep. Probably making Dickwella think whether the length will be short.
70.6 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, pushed back to the bowler. 196/5
70.5 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Outside off, turning away, left alone. 196/5
70.4 D Bishoo to Dickwella, On middle and leg, spinning in, ND goes back and plays it through mid-wicket for a run. 196/5
70.3 D Bishoo to Dickwella, The batsman defends it from within the crease. 195/5
70.2 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Appeal for a catch but it is turned down. Floated outside off, Niroshan stretches out to sweep but the ball goes off his arm to leg slip. Wait a second - replays show the ball hitting the glove! Have the Windies missed a moment again? 195/5
70.1 D Bishoo to Dickwella, Tossed up outside off, Dickwella stays back and defends it to the off side. 195/5
69.6 M Cummins to Chandimal, This time it is solidly blocked. 195/5
69.5 M Cummins to Chandimal, Peach, apple, mango, cherry - call it what you like. Unplayable ball from Cummins. He lands it on a length outside off and it comes in sharply after pitching. Chandimal is squared up as he looks to defend and his good luck avoids an outside edge. 195/5
69.4 M Cummins to Chandimal, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 195/5
69.3 M Cummins to Chandimal, Stays back in his crease and blocks. 195/5
69.2 M Cummins to Chandimal, Pushed to the cover region by the batsman. 195/5
69.1 M Cummins to Chandimal, Outside off, solidly blocked out. 195/5
The last ray of hope for Sri Lanka - Niroshan Dickwella - comes out to bat at number 7, replacing Gamage.
68.6 Bishoo to Gamage, OUT! No bat and Gamage has to depart. The googly from Bishoo, pitched outside off, Lahiru comes forward to defend, anticipating a leggie but is done in by the wrong 'un. Is hit right in front of the stumps, on the pads and umpire Aleem Dar has absolutely no hesitation in raising his finger. Gamage starts to walk but Chandimal insists that the review should be taken. Probably because of the long stride which Gamage got. Sadly, for the Lankans, that cannot save them either. They end up losing a review as The Hawk Eye shows the ball to be hitting the middle stump. Windies 5 wickets away from a 1-0 series lead. 195/5
Gamage has been adjudged LBW! However, he has been asked to wait by Chandimal. Sri Lanka are taking the review. Looks dead though - unless there is bat.
68.5 D Bishoo to Gamage, Tossed up nicely, outside off, Gamage comes forward and blocks. 195/4
68.4 D Bishoo to Gamage, Full and outside off, solidly defended. 195/4
68.3 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, driven towards long off for a single. 195/4
68.2 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, pushed to the off side. 194/4
68.1 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 194/4
67.6 M Cummins to Gamage, On a length, around off, defended in front of short leg. 194/4
67.5 M Cummins to Gamage, A bouncer, on middle, Lahiru ducks. 194/4
67.4 M Cummins to Gamage, The batsman defends it from within the crease. 194/4
67.3 M Cummins to Chandimal, On middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a single. Or is it? A leg bye signalled. 194/4
67.2 M Cummins to Chandimal, Down the leg side, flick shot missed. 193/4
67.1 M Cummins to Chandimal, Ooohh... on a length outside off, Chandimal looks to tuck it to the leg side but gets a bit of a leading edge to the off side. 193/4
66.6 D Bishoo to L Gamage, Full and outside off, Gamage comes forward to defend but gets an outside edge. However, since he played that with soft hands, the edge did not carry to Jason Holder at gully. 193/4
66.5 D Bishoo to Gamage, Outside off, this one does not turn, left alone. 193/4
66.4 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Short and outside off, cut through point for a single. 193/4
66.3 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Outside off, solidly defended. 192/4
Holder comes in now, at gully.
66.2 D Bishoo to Chandimal, EDGED, SHORT! Bishoo makes an impact straightaway. Full and outside off, spinning away, Chandimal lunges to defend but the ball turns, takes the outside edge and almost carries to Devon Smith at first slip who dives to his right and stops runs. 192/4
66.1 D Bishoo to Chandimal, Full and outside off, pushed to the off side. 192/4
Finally. Devendra Bishoo comes into the attack. He should be able to make use of the inconsistent bounce.
DRINKS are on the field. What an attritional hour of cricket. 12.2 overs, only 16 runs and the big wicket of Kusal Mendis. The Windies have been exceptionally consistent with their bowling and the result is that the Lankans have been forced to go into a shell. The pitch has shown signs of inconsistent bounce right from the first over this morning and batting definitely will not be easy. A positive for Sri Lanka is that night watchman Lahiru Gamage has managed to absorb the pressure. However, the home side will feel that it is just 2 wickets away from enforcing a collapse. As of now, the win looks out of the window for the Lankans. They will hope that Chandimal and later on Dickwella see off this bowling. 14 overs to go for the second new ball.
65.6 M Cummins to Gamage, Outside off, solidly blocked out to end the over. 192/4
65.5 M Cummins to Gamage, Outside off, left alone again. 192/4
65.4 M Cummins to Gamage, That kicks off again. Cummins bends his back and gets the ball to rise from short of a length. Lahiru is in the air while trying to fend and just about misses it. 192/4
65.3 M Cummins to Gamage, On a length and straight, Gamage does well to keep it down in front of short leg. 192/4
65.2 M Cummins to Gamage, Outside off, on a length, moving away, shouldered arms to. 192/4
65.1 M Cummins to Chandimal, On middle and leg, flicked through square leg for a single. 192/4
64.6 K Roach to Gamage, The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump. 191/4
64.5 K Roach to Gamage, Around off, comes back in sharply, stays low as well, Lahiru defends watchfully. He has NOT played even one shot in anger. 191/4
64.4 K Roach to Gamage, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 191/4
64.3 K Roach to Gamage, A bouncer now, ducked under. 191/4
64.2 K Roach to Gamage, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 191/4
64.1 K Roach to Gamage, Full and outside off, well defended again. 191/4
63.6 M Cummins to Chandimal, On a length outside off, nicely blocked out. 191/4
63.5 M Cummins to Chandimal, The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through. 191/4
63.4 M Cummins to Chandimal, Stays back in his crease and blocks. 191/4
63.3 M Cummins to Chandimal, Outside off, quietly left alone. 191/4
63.2 M Cummins to Chandimal, The batsman has attempted to put bat on ball - but fails. 191/4
63.1 M Cummins to Chandimal, IS THAT OUT? Nope. What a start from Cummins. He lands it on back of a length outside off and forces Chandimal to play at that. The ball kicks off the surface and nearly takes the outside edge. Windies appeal but it is not given. Replays confirm the ball whizzing past the edge. 191/4
Double change. Miguel Cummins into the attack.
62.6 K Roach to Gamage, Outside off, a play and a miss from Gamage. 191/4
62.5 K Roach to Gamage, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 191/4
62.4 K Roach to Chandimal, On middle and leg, flicked aerially, wide of the fielder at short mid-wicket for a single. That was not too far from the fielder. 191/4
62.3 K Roach to Chandimal, The batsman has punched that ball through the off side. 190/4
62.2 K Roach to Chandimal, Wider, outside off again, let through once more. 190/4
62.1 K Roach to Chandimal, On a length outside off, pretty wide, left alone. 190/4
Kemar Roach comes into the attack. As expected, Shannon Gabriel is going off the field. His last spell read - 4.2-0-8-1 - simply terrific. It might be the last we could see of him till Lunch.
61.6 S Gabriel to Gamage, Full and just outside off, extra bounce, played well though, to the off side. 190/4
61.5 S Gabriel to Gamage, Outside off, left alone. 190/4
Sunil Gavaskar on air observes the Mendis dismissal once again, trying to find any error in the batsman's footwork. He does not find any. Rather, he sympathizes with the batter. Says that when one is well set, he normally tends to get closer to the ball. Even if Mendis had been on the back foot, it would not have made any difference, opines Gavaskar. However, he adds that had it been a new man at the crease, he would have been tentative and might have played and missed.
61.4 S Gabriel to Chandimal, Played to the mid-wicket region by the batsman. One run added to the total. 190/4
61.3 S Gabriel to Chandimal, OOPS... This one comes off the crack from outside off, Dinesh feels for it but the ball stays low. It takes the bottom edge and goes perilously close to the off stump, bouncing in front of the keeper. 189/4
61.2 S Gabriel to Chandimal, Around off, defended watchfully. 189/4
61.1 S Gabriel to Chandimal, Full and just outside off, watchfully defended. 189/4
60.6 J Holder to Gamage, Full and just outside off, watchfully defended. 189/4
60.5 J Holder to L Gamage, The batsman gets an inside edge and the ball hits him on the pads. 189/4
60.4 J Holder to Gamage, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 189/4
60.3 J Holder to Gamage, Outside off, left alone again. 189/4
60.2 J Holder to Gamage, Very full, on middle and leg, Gamage misses his flick and is hit on the pads. Holder starts to appeal but then bails out. Probably going down leg... 189/4
60.1 J Holder to Gamage, Outside off, left alone. 189/4
Skipper Dinesh Chandimal walks out now. Remember, he had gone off the field due to poor health last afternoon.
59.6 S Gabriel to Mendis, OUT! UNPLAYABLE! That is a snorter from Gabriel and Mendis is out of here. What a ball. It is landed on a good length outside off and Kusal comes half-forward to defend. Nothing wrong about that - on pitches with uncertain bounce, that is the way one should play. But suddenly, the ball shoots up, takes the glove and rises even higher. Dowrich leaps and takes it. Tough luck for Mendis. He could have done NOTHING about that. Gabriel has provided the knockout punch. Well played, Mendis. 189/4
59.5 S Gabriel to Mendis, The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 189/3
59.4 S Gabriel to Mendis, Outside off, a push and a miss. 189/3
59.3 S Gabriel to Mendis, ALMOST! A yorker outside off, KM looks to dig it out. Then, the ball bounces and hits the back of his bat. It threatens to hit the stumps and he tries to swish it away, almost hitting the stumps himself! In the end, everything is fine. 189/3
59.2 S Gabriel to Mendis, Down the leg side, Kusal misses his flick. 189/3
59.2 S Gabriel to Mendis, NO BALL. Second for the day. And this is bigger than the previous one. Unfortunately, that is good only in high jump events. Mendis defends it towards cover. 189/3
The drizzle is back! It is heavy again. However, the umpires are staying out in the middle. In fact, as I type that, the drizzle has disappeared as well.
59.1 S Gabriel to Mendis, On a length outside off, defended to the off side. 188/3
More repairs for Gamage's finger. The physio has come out again.
58.6 J Holder to Gamage, LBW shout but not out. A length ball, on middle, angling down, Gamage misses his flick and is hit on the pads. Holder appeals but to no avail. Probably going down leg. Yup, Hawk Eye confirms. 188/3
58.5 J Holder to Gamage, Around off, defended watchfully. 188/3
58.4 J Holder to Gamage, One more leave outside off. 188/3
58.3 J Holder to Gamage, Outside off, left alone. 188/3
58.2 J Holder to Gamage, On a length this time, outside off, pushed towards point. 188/3
58.1 J Holder to Gamage, A short ball outside off, rising steeply, Gamage plays that nicely by rising with the bounce and fending it to the off side. 188/3
57.6 S Gabriel to Gamage, The batsman has flicked the ball off his pads. One run added to the total. 188/3
The physio is out in the middle now. Gamage is certainly not happy. Remember, he is a fast bowler and the second Test begins on the 14th. Out comes the magic spray.
57.5 S Gabriel to Gamage, OUCH! That has stung. Gabriel bends his back and extracts steep bounce. Gamage looks to fend that but is beaten by pace. Is pinged on the gloves and immediately drops his bat down, wringing his hand in pain. 187/3
Did you know? 3 of Kusal Mendis' previous 4 tons have ended up in scores of 175-plus. All the best, Windies!!!
57.4 S Gabriel to K Mendis, Driven towards the mid on region. They pick up a single. 187/3
57.4 S Gabriel to Mendis, NO BALL. Gabriel opens his overstepping account for the day. This is by a big margin as well. Mendis defends watchfully. 186/3
57.3 S Gabriel to K Mendis, Fuller, pushed straight towards mid on. 185/3
57.2 S Gabriel to Mendis, Around off, well blocked out. 185/3
57.1 S Gabriel to Mendis, Landed outside off, Mendis is squared up but adjusts well to push it towards gully. 185/3
56.6 J Holder to Gamage, Outside off, comes back in a long way, Lahiru gets across and looks to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. Holder starts to appeal but then withdraws it quickly. 185/3
56.5 J Holder to Gamage, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 185/3
56.4 J Holder to Gamage, Around off and outside off, solidly defended. 185/3
56.3 J Holder to Mendis, On middle and leg, another flick, this time only for a single. The stand is worth 10 now. 185/3
56.2 J Holder to Mendis, FOUR! HUNDRED FOR MENDIS! His fifth in Test cricket but perhaps his second best in terms of importance after that 176 against Australia. A loose ball from the usually tight Holder, a half volley on the pads, Mendis just flicks it casually behind square leg and finds the fence. He does not celebrate as magnanimously as Dowrich, but just removes his helmet and accepts the applause from the Lankan dressing room. His team mates are standing up for him. This is a big knock. But it needs to get bigger for the Lankans and Mendis realizes that. Let's move on. 269 more needed for a victory. 184/3
56.1 J Holder to Mendis, Outside off, comes in a long way, left alone. 180/3
55.6 S Gabriel to Gamage, Down the leg side, Lahiru misses his tuck and the ball goes off his thigh pads towards leg gully. 180/3
55.5 S Gabriel to Gamage, Down the leg side, tucked past short leg for a couple of runs. 180/3
55.4 S Gabriel to Gamage, A sharp bouncer, right at the head, Gamage ducks. 178/3
55.3 S Gabriel to Mendis, On middle and off, this is clipped through mid-wicket for a single. 178/3
55.2 S Gabriel to Mendis, AND NOW THIS DOES NOT BOUNCE! Already the pitch is showing signs of venom. The previous one saw the ball shoot up, while this one does not bounce much at all. The length was not much different from the previous one - just outside off and on a length. Only this time, Mendis decided to play it from the crease - probably because of the previous ball and looked to defend - only to get beaten. 177/3
55.1 S Gabriel to Mendis, On a length around off, bounces awkwardly, Mendis gets across but does well to push it towards mid on. That was very well played. Many times, when a batsman comes forward and there is sudden bounce, he is unable to play and ends up nicking it behind. 177/3
54.6 J Holder to Mendis, Down the leg side, flicked through square leg for a single. 177/3
54.5 J Holder to Mendis, Another ball down the leg side, KM misses his flick. That definitely seems to be a ploy by the Windies - get the batsman or batsmen caught down the leg side. 176/3
54.4 J Holder to Mendis, Full and just outside off, solidly defended. 176/3
54.3 J Holder to Mendis, Outside off, left alone. 176/3
54.2 J Holder to Mendis, Ahh... teasing. Holder bowls it full and wide outside off, tempting Kusal to go after that one. Mendis thinks about the drive and almost commits, before stopping himself at the last moment. A play and a miss results. 176/3
54.1 J Holder to Mendis, Strays this down the leg side, Mendis nearly nicks it to the keeper. Dowrich fumbles. 176/3
The drizzle has left us as quickly as it arrived. It is bright and sunny now. Jason Holder to start off proceedings for the day. Slip and a gully in place for Kusal Mendis.
53.6 S Gabriel to Gamage, Very full outside off, but wide enough to be shouldered arms to. 176/3
53.5 S Gabriel to Gamage, On a length outside off, Gamage plays inside the line but gets beaten. 176/3
Everyone is out in the middle now. Gabriel will complete his pending over from last night. Gamage to face...
The umpires are walking out to the middle but they are being accompanied by heavy droplets. It seems to be a condition in which play can be possible because the men who matter are not bothered much.
PITCH REPORT - Sunil Gavaskar doing the pitch report observes that the track is still a batting beauty. There are some cracks which are opening up due to the soil getting loose but they are not that alarming. Praises the curator for preparing a very good pitch.
Angelo Mathews is having a chat with Roshan Abeysinghe. The former skipper says that the Lankans aim to play positive cricket and try and see whether the target can be chased down. On the plans, he slyly says that those are for the team and he will keep it to himself. On the wicket, he expects it to be very unpredictable and hopes his batsmen will be careful enough. Praises Windies for their bowling attack and admits that the Lankans need to be up to the challenge and play accordingly. Feels that the wicket is not turning as much but the invariable bounce is what is causing problems for the batsmen. On his own soft dismissal in the second innings, he feels himself unfortunate to get caught down the leg side. Is even more disappointed because he could not convert his start. On Chandimal's fitness, Mathews says that he is fine and will come out to bat if needed.
For the Windies, Devendra Bishoo will play a very, very key role. The focus will be on the fast bowlers but the leggie will have to pick up wickets as he will be bowling for most part of the day. Yesterday evening, he struck at a very crucial juncture, removing Roshen Silva. The first job for the Windies will be to remove the night watchman Lahiru Gamage and then keep striking. The first hour will be important.
There is a word called 'Kushalta' in Hindi language, which means well-being. No rocket science - if Sri Lanka have to emerge victorious or prevent defeat, KUSAL MENDIS has to bat for a long, long while. He is 6 short of a century but he has to be around at least till Tea for the visitors to have a chance. Also, it will be intriguing to see if Dinesh Chandimal is fit and when does he come out to bat. He will play a crucial role too.
The track seems to have eased out a lot ever since the third day. There is turn available but not as much as one would expect on the concluding days of a Test. The Windies batted long enough to keep Sri Lanka on the field but the Asian team has fought back hard. Day 4 was not the best of days for the home side, as it looked listless for a major portion. However, today is a new day and we might see a rejuvenated unit.
Cannot get better than this. One side needs 277 runs while the other requires 7 wickets. 540 legal balls will be allotted to both. Who will triumph? Or will neither win? Hello and a warm welcome accompanied by a heartfelt gratitude for joining us. It is Day 5 of the first Test between Windies and Sri Lanka in Trinidad.
... FINAL DAY ...
Too many questions to answer on the final day. Will the weather hold fine? If it does, will Chandimal come out to bat, if needed that is? Will Sri Lanka continue their spirited fightback or will the Windies run through the remaining wickets? Join us to find out on what promises to be a super Sunday at 1000 local (1400 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye.
The Windies bowlers, on the other hand, did bowl well but in patches. Shannon Gabriel once again was lethal with the new ball but Roach did not provide the support he needed. Holder got the priced scalp of Mathews and also kept it tight. Bishoo did get purchase off the wicket and he too was rewarded towards the end. They still need another seven wickets and would surely fancy their chances heading into Day 5!
Chasing a massive target, the Lankans lost Kusal Perera early. Kusal Mendis however, continued on his merry way. He constructed vital stands first with his skipper, Chandimal, who went back retired ill. Then a 74-run stand and a 52-run partnership with Mathews and Silva respectively before the two got out in a soft manner. A lot will be depending on the shoulders of the young Mendis and his captain Chandimal if and when he comes out to bat on Day 5. The former rode his luck along but is fighting it out there. They still need another 277 and the away side will hope, the opener is the mainstay and the rest bat alongside him.
The light has been offered to the batsmen and they haven taken it. IT IS STUMPS ON DAY 4! This game is far from over. But it will be the Windies who will walk off the field as the happier side due to the late wicket of Roshen Silva. Sri Lanka though will feel pleased with the fact that they still have Kusal Mendis out there who is just six short of a ton.
53.4 S Gabriel to Gamage, A yorker on middle, Gamage does well, really well to jam it out. 176/3
53.3 S Gabriel to Gamage, Howzat? The answer to that question is not out. The inside edge saved Gamage there. On a length and around off, this one comes back in sharply. Gamage tries to defend it off the front foot but the ball takes the inside edge and goes onto hit the pads. The players appeal but the umpire shakes his head. Holder and his teammates think about a review but do not go for it. 176/3
53.2 S Gabriel to Gamage, Short and outside off, the batsman lets it be. 176/3
53.1 S Gabriel to Mendis, Back of a length on middle, Mendis tucks it towards mid-wicket. The fielder there is a bit deep. Mendis wanted a run but Gamage was on his heels. Kusal however, went through with it and Lahiru eventually had to go for it. The fielder from that position comes running in and has a shy at the non-striker's end but misses. 176/3
52.6 D Bishoo to Gamage, Floats it up on off, defended. 175/3
Lahiru Gamage, the nightwatchman, walks out to the middle.
52.5 Bishoo to Silva, OUT! Caught and bowled! A wicket at a very critical moment. Another soft one. A nothing delivery. It was short and on middle, Roshen goes back and tries to play it. The ball stops on him. It takes the leading edge and lobs towards the bowler who moves to his right and accepts a dolly. Another stand which has been not converted and the Windies are on top now. Can they take one more before Stumps? 175/3
52.4 D Bishoo to Silva, Driven through mid on by the batsman. 175/2
52.3 D Bishoo to Mendis, Works it around the corner for a run and moves to 93. 175/2

A leg slip in place. A change in line for the leggie, a leg stump one maybe.
49.6 S Gabriel to Mendis, Shorter on the body, Mendis works it to fine leg and retains strike for the next over. He moves onto 81. 160/2
49.5 S Gabriel to K Mendis, EDGY FOUR! Sri Lanka will take it any which way. On a length around off, straightens after pitching. Mendis lunges forward and tries to defend but the ball takes the outside edge and goes down to the third man fence. 159/2

49.3 S Gabriel to Mendis, Defended off the back foot by the batsman. 155/2

Roshen Silva is the next man in.
43.5 J Holder to Mathews, OUT! GONE! The skipper provides the much, much-needed breakthrough. The change of ends does the trick. However, this was by no means a wicket-taking delivery but he won't care. This is down the leg side. Mathews tries to tickle it fine but he hits it too close to the keeper. Dowrich moves to his left and accepts an easy catch. The Windies players appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Mathews can't believe it as he trudges off slowly. End of the 74-run stand. The Windies are all pumped up. Is this the opening they wanted? They have less than 12 overs to go for Stumps. Can they eke out another? 123/2

40.1 J Holder to Mendis, Starts off with a length ball outside off, Mendis guides it to point. 113/1

Drinks break. Boy! This has been one incredibly fightback from the visiting team. These two have batted with a lot of positivity post Tea and have kept scoreboard ticking. Mendis has registered his sixth Test fifty, while Mathews too has looked in great rhythm. West Indies, on the other hand, have only themselves to blame. Their bowlers did create a few opportunities which were grassed by their fielders. An interesting final phase of the day is in the store for us, just don't go anywhere.
39.6 M Cummins to Mendis, That's 50 to Mendis, this has been an incredible knock from the talented young lad. He was handed a couple of reprieves and has made full use of it. His team desperately needed someone to stand tall in this chase and he has answered the call. Though there is still a long way to go in this match and he needs to make this into a three-digit score. Coming to the ball, Mendis gets a delivery on his pads and he works it to fine leg for a single. 113/1
39.5 M Cummins to K Mendis, The batsman has driven it through mid off. 112/1
39.4 M Cummins to Mendis, Muted appeal for caught behind!
