Odisha Class XII results: Arts result sees a dip, commerce improves

The pass percentage in Plus Two Arts dropped by nearly 2 pc while that of Commerce improved by around 3 pc against last year in the results declared by Council of Higher Secondary Education.

BHUBANESWAR: The pass percentage in Plus Two Arts dropped by nearly 2 pc while that of Commerce improved by around 3 pc against last year in the results declared by Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) here on Saturday. Only four students secured 90 per cent and above in both the streams.

The score in Arts was not very encouraging with only one girl Abheepsa Mishra of Ravenshaw Junior College, Cuttack securing 90 per cent in the stream. Mishra fetched 541 marks to become topper in Arts.
The overall result of Arts stream showed a decline of 1.38 per cent with only 68.79 per cent students clearing the exam compared to 70.17 per cent last year. The pass rate among girls and boys in the stream stood at 75.39 per cent and 60.88 per cent respectively.

Out of 2.3 lakh students in Arts, 1.58 lakh cleared the exam, including 94,619 girls. While 4,006 students secured first division, as many as 3,734 students passed in second division.

In Commerce stream, about 74.91 per cent students cleared the exam registering a rise of around 3 pc, compared to 71.39 per cent last year. The stream had joint toppers - Anish Patnaik of Shiksha College, Berhampur and Sai Pravin Patnaik of Rayagada Junior College scored 544 marks and shared the top spot. B Leelarani of Khallikote Junior College, Berhampur secured 542 marks to notch the second place.
Of the total 26,984 students who wrote the Commerce exam, 20,216 students cleared it. Only 299 students secured first division while 1,692 students passed in second division. The pass percentage in vocational courses was 52.61 per cent.

Sourav Kumar Barik of Government Vocational Junior College, Kendrapara secured 510 marks to be topper.

School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra, who announced the results at CHSE office, said only one student managed to get above 90 per cent in Arts while three grabbed 90-plus per cent in Commerce stream.

“Publication of results for Arts and Commerce got delayed but we managed to publish it successfully in spite of hurdles such as teachers strike and delayed evaluation process,” the School and Mass Education Minister said.

On the other hand, president of 622 Teachers’ Association, Golak Nayak criticised the State Government for fall in pass percentage in Arts, Science and Vocational courses. He asked the Government to address the grievances of teachers to improve the quality of education.

CHSE had conducted the Plus II examination between March 5 and March 29 at 1,104 centres in over 1,500 colleges across State. Around 3.65 lakh students had appeared for the exams including 2.33 lakh students from Arts and 36,447 students from Commerce stream.

In the Science results published on May 19, about 76.98 per cent students cleared the paper. Girls had outsmarted boys in the stream with 78.88 per cent girls clearing the test against 75.69 per cent boys.
The pass percentage of science stream had also declined by 5 per cent from 81.11 per cent in 2017 to 76.98 per cent this year.

Girls outshine boys
In both the streams, girls outsmarted boys. The overall pass percentage for girls in Arts stream was 76.33 per cent against 66.78 per cent for boys. The pass percentage of girls and boys in Commerce pegged at 78.48 per cent and 73.11 per cent respectively

Nil results
A CHSE official said result for Arts was nil in one college in Ganjam, while six colleges registered zero result in Commerce. The result is also nil in 14 vocational colleges.
100 pc success
Four colleges registered 100 pc results in Arts stream, while 35 colleges recorded cent per cent results in Commerce.
