L'ANSE, Mich. (WLUC) - L'Anse's Waterfront Park was packed Saturday afternoon with a family fun event.
It's the 13th Annual Baraga County Lake Trout Festival, surrounding the trout and salmon fishing tournament in Lake Superior. 417 fishermen and women participated this year, ages ranging from five years old to 88 years old, with 132 boats. Prize money for this year totals more than $16,000. First place in both the trout and salmon categories take home $1,500, and winners for the largest fish get $100.
Vendors lined the streets, and children flocked the kids carnival with a bounce house and obstacle courses. A big hit was the DNR's kids fishing pond, part of free fishing weekend, where kids could catch and keep trout.
"We do it for the family, everything's free. We got cotton candy, popcorn, the only thing you have to pay for is through the vendors. The kid's carnival is sponsored through the Ojibwa Casino. They do it every year for 13 years, and I think it's just a free family fun event," says Tracey Barrett, Executive Director of the Baraga County Convention Visitor's Bureau.
A number of sponsors make the free event possible, and coordinators hope to have another great turnout next year.
