Low-pressure zone over Bay of Bengal to cause weekend rain

BHUBANESWAR: A day after hitting the Odisha coast, the southwest monsoon, by Saturday, advanced to few more parts of the state causing light to moderate rainfall.

A low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify further into depression in the next 48 hours.

The India Meteorological Department forecast said the monsoon would advance further to the whole state soon.

"Conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon into some more parts of Odisha. If such a trend continues it would cover the entire state soon," said the new director of the regional IMD centre, Habibur Rehman Biswas. He said the low pressure is likely to intensify further to depression.

For Sunday, the forecast said rain or thundershowers may occur at most places over Odisha. Official rainfall report recorded on Saturday morning noted that many places in the state received rainfall in the last 24 hours even as the trend decreased during the day.

Nimapara, in last 24 hours, recorded highest rainfall of 80 mm in the state. The major rainfall recorded at other places during the day include Chandanpur and Sorada (70 mm each), Purusotampur and Aska (60 mm each). The capital city recorded 0.5 mm rainfall. Balasore and Sonepur received 13 and 7 mm rainfall respectively during the day.

Rainfall at many places also influenced a drop in day temperature all over the state on Saturday. The mercury hovered between normal or below normal at many places. Titlagarh recorded highest day temperature of 38.5oC in the state. The state capital recorded maximum day temperatu of 33oC.
