JAJPUR: Intensive search operation is underway at Kharasrota river under Jajpur Sadar police limits to trace a woman who was pushed into the river by some unknown miscreants on Friday night.
The district fire department and ODRAF teams are at work to trace the missing woman, police said.

Sources said people residing at the banks of Kharasrota river near Rajghat bridge heard a woman crying for help. Upon reaching the bridge, they saw the woman floating on the river. “We heard the screams of a woman on the river bridge and reached  the spot. But to our dismay, we saw the woman was in the river water and was shouting for help. She claimed that some people had pushed her  into the river from the bridge,” said a resident of Rajghat. He added that due to strong current, the locals did not venture into the river to rescue the victim.

The  locals then informed about the incident to the police station. By the time the local police reached the spot, the woman was already swept away far from the bridge at Rajghat. “We then called both the fire department and ODRAF and they started a search operation throughout the night but in vain. Intensive search operation was also carried out on Saturday but the woman is yet to be rescued,” said a police official.

Police suspect the unknown woman was raped before being pushed into the Kharasrota river from the bridge at Rajghat.  Police also suspect two or three people were involved in the crime. “It is our primary concern to rescue the woman and ascertain her identity. We intimated the local police stations to be on the lookout for the woman and provide us as much as information as possible”, said the police official.
