Man killed in tree-fall in Kodagu; woman washed away in stream in Dakshina Kannada

Incessant rain accompanied by strong winds in Kodagu claimed a man’s life on Saturday when a tree fell on him at a coffee estate in Kodagu district on Saturday.

The victim, P.C. Ahmad Kutty Haaji, 65, was supervising plantation work in his estate at Nellihudikeri village. Locals said incessant rain accompanied by strong wind brought a branch of a giant tree crashing down. Ahmad who was standing beneath the tree was grievously injured. He succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to hospital at Siddapura. Ahmad was an avid collector of vintage cars and had 85 cars in his collection which he used to showcase to the public at his Mubarak Estate.

Meanwhile, monsoon has remained active in Kodagu since Thursday. Bhagamandala, Talacauvery, Napoklu, Siddapura, Shanthahalli, and Shanivarasanthe have received heavy to very heavy rain. The district received 47.9 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday.

In Dakshina Kannada

Moderate to heavy rain continued to lash the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada on Saturday. A 50-year-old woman was washed away in a stream in Venur, Belthangady taluk, in Dakshina Kannada. There were reports of damage to houses, tree falls and washing away of a portion of roads in the three districts.

CM convenes meeting

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has convened a meeting of senior bureaucrats on June 13 in Bengaluru to discuss rain damage, monsoon-related situation, and other prominent issues related to administration.

According to an official release, the meeting would be attended by additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries and secretaries of various departments besides in-charge secretaries for the districts.
